Hi guys,
I have been struggling to get a working X environment for the last 3 days and I am getting extremely frustrated. I have read through the ATI FAQ http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/ati-faq.xml, Hardware 3D Acceleration Guide http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/dri-howto.xml#doc_chap2, X Server Config HowTo http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml, Gentoo Radeon Wiki http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Radeon as well as numerous forum posts from people with similar issues but I have been unsuccessful.
I have an 'almost' completely fresh Gentoo installation. After installing the OS I followed the X install guide taking care to build the kernel with the necessary modules for my HD 5450. Despite this I was unable to startx and would continually receive "no screens found" errors. Since that point I have tried a number of things including installing the proprietary ati-drivers over the Gentoo modules, all without success.
If there is someone out there who can help me get a working X environment so I can install a desktop environment and move on, I would be extremely grateful.
Anyone assisting should assume I have limited knowledge of Linux. I have some experience with Fedora, Mandrake and Ubuntu but on a very limited level. A lot of what I learned came from the struggles with Gentoo and X. Let me know what sort of log files you need and I will get the output.
Thanks. |

This guide worked perfectly. With that information I was successfully able to get X running. I really appreciate the link as it appears to have solved my issues with X. Now all that's left to do is instll a desktop environment. Hopefully that will be smoother for me.
Thank you very much! |
