Why does Gentoo even bother with install CDs? They're a pain to maintain, and half the architectures don't even have them.

For x86/amd64 and SPARC one can use sysresccd which is only twice the size of the "minimal" x86/amd64 install image. Moreover, having a sysresccd disc/stick around is handy if you b0rk your system.

It started off as a joke. Mike Rafusiano said, "lets make an 'install CD' and see how many fools download and use it". Then they had to wait until people stopped so they'd know how many. Mike moved on, and the other guys forgot about the joke over the years, and here we are.

Yeah, why bother to use a LiveCD that is CLI only when you can install Gentoo with SystemRescueCD and browse the handbook and be online on the forum/IRC if you are stuck.

For news and ranking shit of site that classify linux (yep, read distrowatch here).

With their system, any distro that doesn't make noise is a bad distro.
And any dumb distro that update every 1 day is a kick ass distro.

So a distro like gentoo is bad for their ranking, but with a livecd/dvd you are getting news & fame.

If you have more than one computer that's not a problem...

Yes, I know. With SystemRescueCD or a LiveCD, you can browse while you install without using a second computer. (I do prefer to use SSH and work from a different machine, though, since it reduces the load on the install machine, which is already trying to run an OS from RAM and perform an installation.)

but with the minimal install cd you can only browse with a text-browser (if I'm right)... anyway, next time I will try it the ssh-way, although with 16GB RAM one doesn't need to worry about RAM

Install cd and now people are reading the doc...

Gentoo has become too easy, maybe we should put back the good old installer to spice this again

well, I want to install gentoo on a smartphone and on a lemote-laptop which is very spicy (at least the smartphone installation)... and maybe if I have enough time left to build a small robot with gentoo as OS...

I still think the Misa Guitar is the most awesome Gentoo yet.
