VirtualBox, problem with installing a guest system from iso.

So, I tried to install a different distribution of linux onto virtualbox but it could not read the ISO, I got an error saying VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED.

The problem might be, I downloaded the iso image from the site. I think gentoo read it as a 7 zip file. I just added '.iso' on the end because it was an iso file anyway. Could this be a reason why it does not work? I thought maybe it was a problem because the .7z was still there so i renamed it to just download1.iso. That didn't work either.

I should probably get the 7zip thing and extract to iso...right?

It was Extracting and then i got an:

I tested the integrity and it said it was ok.

oh wow. it works. The files in there are .vmdk files. There's two of them: s001.vmdk and s002.vmdk. Then caches directory. Do I make the entire thing a .iso and then mount it or do I directly mount one of the .vmdk??
EDIT: vmdk files are split. How do I created an iso image with the entire directory? I googled everywhere and couldn't understand how to.
Is it suppose to be going for this long? It's been like 15 minutes.

It depends on how they are split. It may not matter.

Some VMs split their guest filesystems into 2G chunks so that they work on vfat filesystems. The virtual machine manages the bits.
.vmdk is a virtual machine image, or part of one. What does file say about them ?

It looks like you do not create an *.iso image. You have an image of a Virtual Machine guest. You just need to put the bits in the right places and start the VM.

Is there a READ.ME file in with the download or some instructions on the site you fetched it from?
