Firefox - www-client/firefox-17.0-r1 - failed to install because I ran out of space in /var/tmp/portage - only had 5000MB (4.9GB). What kind of monster did this program become? LibreOffice doesn't even need that much space.

Also the ebuild must have a lot of cruft in it as this gets reported:
Code:
 *      configure: WARNING: unrecognized options: --enable-application, --enable-optimize, --with-system-jpeg, --with-system-zlib, --enable-pango, --enable-svg, --enable-system-cairo, --disable-installer, --disable-pedantic, --disable-updater, --disable-strip, --disable-strip-libs, --disable-install-strip, --enable-single-profile, --disable-profilesharing, --disable-profilelocking, --enable-default-toolkit, --enable-official-branding, --enable-ogg, --enable-wave, --enable-dbus, --disable-tests, --disable-debugger-info-modules, --enable-ipc, --enable-libnotify, --enable-startup-notification, --disable-system-sqlite, --disable-necko-wifi, --enable-webm, --with-system-libvpx, --enable-tracejit, --with-system-nspr, --with-nspr-prefix, --with-system-nss, --with-nss-prefix, --with-system-libevent, --enable-system-hunspell, --disable-gnomevfs, --disable-gnomeui, --enable-gio, --disable-crashreporter, --enable-storage, --enable-places, --enable-places_bookmarks, --enable-oji, --enable-mathml, --disable-mochitest, --disable-gconf, --disable-mailnews, --enable-canvas, --enable-safe-browsing, --with-system-png, --enable-system-ffi, --with-default-mozilla-five-home, --enable-gstreamer, --disable-system-sqlite, --enable-methodjit, --enable-tracejit, --enable-extensions

Looks like some major cleanup is in order.

Firefox now compiles in a way that creates multiple gigabytes of temp files at the end. You'll need at least 6GB disk space to build (to say nothing of RAM usage...)

And that's exactly justifies the original question

The cause is something to do with it forcing a LTO build, because they bought into the microbenchmark fad wholesale.

If it's any consolation we're not alone; they had to cut out features because it was failing to build on their windows build servers too...
