I am using Claws mail version 3.8.1 on gentoo amd64 and I have two imap accounts on it - a google one and another one. When I start the program everything works fine. However after a period of inactivity (>~5min) if I try to refresh the accounts in order to see if new email has arrived, the whole process takes about 2-3min, when it shouldn't take more than a few seconds. Here is what I get in a terminal:

Code:
** (claws-mail:2804): WARNING **: [22:10:58] IMAP error on imap.googlemail.com: stream error
** (claws-mail:2804): WARNING **: [22:11:59] IMAP4 connection broken
++ STATS ++ INC 0 0

Sometimes I also get an error like this:
Code:
** (claws-mail:2804): WARNING **: [23:46:26] IMAP error on imap.googlemail.com: STATUS error

In these cases, after the program freezes, it does not unfreeze, so the only solution is to kill it and restart it.

Both of these errors occur for both IMAP accounts I have on claws-mail.

Any ideas what might be causing this behavior? Thanks.

Does this happen when you use another client? Did this happen on previous versions of claws?

I installed thunderbird and did an identical set-up to that of claws-mail. When I run it, I get the following message:
Code:
$ thunderbird
enigmail.js: Registered components

After I sign up to my accounts, in some cases I do again get the problem that refreshing the mailboxes take an unusually long time. However I do not get any additional error or warning messages in the terminal where I started thunderbird and so far I have not run into the situation, where thunderbird freezes completely and I need to kill it and restart it. I always does eventually refresh.
So does the fact that I get this temporary freezing both in claws-mail and thunderbird suggest that maybe the problem is a bit deeper than just the mail client?

For your "other" mail account, are you running your own mail server?

No, it's a university account. And I use that account with Thunderbird on a windows machine without problems.

I'm using Thunderbird 10.0.10. Should I unmask and install a newer version?

I would. It's up to 16 or so now.

The Thunderbird 10.0.x line is a security-fixes line, much like the Firefox 10.0.x line.

Thanks a lot for your replies. I just checked that the newest version in Thunderbird is 17.0-r1. However from what Hu said I gather that the 10.0.x line contains all the new stuff with some additional security fixes, so there is no point in updating. Is that correct?

In installed Thunderbird 17.0 however the same problem persisted. However I think that I figured out what the problem was and I guess it was not really related to either claws-mail nor thunderbird. I connected to an alternative wireless network and now things seem to be working fine. So I'm guessing that maybe the problem was related to some peculiarity of the wireless network. However I had never had any problems with that network, even when streaming music or video, so I didn't suspect it. Hopefully with this new network I will not be having any problems with my mail programs.
Thanks to everyone who helped!

Some networks ban certain ports, so I'll wager that was the problem. I had to change from a standard mail port to 587 (or something) to get around a similar issue. Fortunately, I run my own mail server, so it was easy enough.
