PostPosted: Sun Nov 18, 2012 8:29 am    Post subject: X doesn't start at boot time, after upgrade [SOLVED] Reply with quote

Hello,

X doesn't start at boot time anymore, after I've upgraded some packages with emerge -pvDu world (x11-base/xorg-server-1.13.0-r1, x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev, x11-drivers/xf86-input-keyboard-1.6.2, x11-drivers/xf86-video-fbdev-0.4.3, x11-drivers/xf86-video-vesa-2.3.2, x11-drivers/xf86-input-mouse-1.8.1, among others not related to x11..).
But, the weird thing, (I mean, weird to me..), is that, when I get thee window saying xorg couldn't start, do you want to read the output messages, (or so), and I go for yes, the window remain empty : no error message.
So I brashly go for a manual startx, and it works : I do get the graphical environment (with Radeon HD4870 1Gb) .

Here's the first output from X at boot time :

With problems such as these it's best to start with the earliest error and work down. Early module failures tend to create cascading faults. In particular I think your issue might be here:

Code:
165.939] (EE) module ABI major version (12) doesn't match the server's version (13)
[ 165.939] (II) UnloadModule: "ati"
[ 165.939] (II) Unloading ati
[ 165.939] (EE) Failed to load module "ati" (module requirement mismatch, 0)

If you are using ATI as the driver then once unloaded it can't make any screens. I suggest reemerging ati. You also appear to have some issue with FBDev but I would start with the ATI:
Code:

[ 166.294] (EE) FBDEV(0): FBIOPUTCMAP: Invalid argument

In general with any xorg upgrade it is often necessary to reemerge all the driver packages even ones that don't show up in the dependency tree.

After upgrading of xorg-server you've to upgrade depending package/s too, either use revdep-rebuild for that and/or follow what the elog/ewarn messages of that packages said during install phase.

Thanx CrankyPenguin for answering.
I'm not sure to know which drivers I'm using, and which one to recompile... So to find out I went for
Code:
lsmod | grep radeon
radeon                715887  2
ttm                    53048  1 radeon
drm_kms_helper         21369  1 radeon
drm                   184706  3 radeon,ttm,drm_kms_helper
i2c_algo_bit            4496  1 radeon
i2c_core               16410  5 radeon,drm_kms_helper,drm,i2c_i801,i2c_algo_bit

Then
Code:
# emerge --search radeon
Searching...
[ Results for search key : radeon ]
[ Applications found : 3 ]

*  app-laptop/radeontool
      Latest version available: 1.5-r3
      Latest version installed: 1.5-r3
      Size of files: 20 kB
      Homepage:      http://fdd.com/software/radeon/
Description:   Control the backlight and external video output of ATI Radeon Mobility graphics cards

*  x11-drivers/radeon-ucode

      Homepage:      http://wiki.x.org/wiki/radeonhd
Description:   Experimental Radeon HD video driver.

So I did re-emerge x11-drivers/radeon-ucode and app-laptop/radeontool, but could not do so with x11-drivers/xf86-video-radeonhd
Code:
# emerge -pv x11-drivers/xf86-video-radeonhd

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "x11-drivers/xf86-video-radeonhd".

Anyway, no success with the re-emerging of these 2 packages. Xorg's log keep mentioning
Code:

toralf, my first shoot was to run revdep-rebuild. As a matter of fact, I had several packages marked as needed to be rebuilt, and the firs one was media-libs/glu, that would fail compiling, until I bump into that solution https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-935230-start-0.html.
Doing so, media-libs/glu did compile fine at revdep-rebuild time, but then all the other packages previously marked for recompiling were not lift anymore by revdep-rebuild. Is there a way to get the history of revdep-rebuild ?
Where can I get posteriorly these elog/ewarn messages ? In emerge's log ? I don't see anything like it in it...

But, the thing is that, when I manually launch X with startx, after it failed at boot time, the errors mentioned in Xorg.0.log and occurring at boot time don't occur anymore :

Isn't it something to do with where Xorg looks for the drivers at boot time ? Oh, I'm confused here...

And this puzzles me :
In /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old (from boot time) :
Code:
[   259.081] (II) LoadModule: "ati"

[   259.100] (II) UnloadModule: "ati"
[   259.100] (II) Unloading ati
[   259.100] (EE) Failed to load module "ati" (module requirement mismatch, 0)

In /var/log/Xorg.0.log (from startx manually)
Code:
[    79.373] (II) LoadModule: "ati"
[    79.373] (II) Loading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/ati_drv.so
[    79.387] (II) Module ati: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
[    79.387]    compiled for 1.13.0, module version = 7.0.0

[    79.387]    ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 13.0
[    79.387] (II) LoadModule: "radeon"
[    79.387] (II) Loading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so
[    79.456] (II) Module radeon: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
[    79.456]    compiled for 1.13.0, module version = 7.0.0
[    79.456]    Module class: X.Org Video Driver
[    79.456]    ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 13.0

This is why.... But how come ?? Is it something to do with what's compiled in the kernel ?

look into /var/log/portage/elog/, in addition you might configure something like
Code:
tfoerste@n22 ~ $ grep ELOG /etc/portage/make.conf
PORTAGE_ELOG_CLASSES="log warn error"
PORTAGE_ELOG_SYSTEM="save mail"
PORTAGE_ELOG_MAILURI="<your user>@localhost"
PORTAGE_ELOG_MAILFROM="portage <portage@localhost>"
to get it emailed to you in case of unattended run of emerge.

Ooooh, I think I kinda completely misled myself, thinking that there were no difference between Xorg.0.log from manual startx, and Xorg.0.log.old, supposed to be from boot time, regarding the drivers and related errors. It's just the same file !!
I rmed Xorg.0.log and reboot... and no Xorg.0.log was produced. I touched,as root, Xorg.0.log, reboot, this file still weight 0...
When I launch X with startx, there, I do get a Xorg.0.log file which says :

My X won't start either via gdm, but does via startx.

it seems its choking on the command line option "+extension XEVIE"

Edit: My bad, i thought my problem was related. I'll create a new thread.

@salahx: don't hijack threads; XEvIE was removed from the server a few years ago.

@Carlino: I've said "pastebin" - the portion above seems truncated.
Also:
(EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib64/dri/r600_dri.so failed (/usr/lib64/dri/r600_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
So likely wrong flags on libdrm.

Sorry VoidMage ; I've reshaped the output. Does that look better ? Anyway, it really is what come's out from Xorg.
I recompiled libdrm
Code:
emerge -pv libdrm

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R    ] x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.40  USE="libkms -static-libs" VIDEO_CARDS="radeon (-exynos) -intel -nouveau (-omap) -vmware" 0 kB

The use flags are set as required in make.conf, it seems

If I google AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib64/dri/r600_dri.so failed, I bump into http://www.x.org/wiki/radeonhd%3Apackages where it mentions xf86-video-radeonhd. Although it used to be installed on my box, et doesn't seem to be in portage anymore...

Code:
emerge -av xf86-video-radeonhd

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "xf86-video-radeonhd".

But once again, isn't it weird that there's no Xorg log at boot time, whereas I get the message that "X server could not start, do you want to read the output file... Yes..." Empty... Seems like whatever "call" Xserver doesn't find it where it's looking... Am i being completely out of sense here ?

Carlino What about this:

Code:
[   239.366] (EE) Failed to load module "modesetting" (module doees not exist, 0)

This may be nothing but without seeing the end of your output I can't tell if there are any other errors.

But also in a followup to the comment from VoidMage after the libdrm rebuild does: /usr/lib64/dri/r600_dri.so exist and is it accessible?

This is because mesa was not built with VIDEO_CARDS="radeon"

Also, the xf86-video-radeonhd package has been removed a long time ago. It makes no sense to have it installed, so you can remove it.

To find out what might disable the radeon flags, the output of the following commands might point you in the right direction:
Code:
# grep -r radeon /etc/portage
# portageq envvar VIDEO_CARDS
# emerge -pv media-libs/mesa[video_cards_radeon]

Code:
# grep -r radeon /etc/portage
/etc/portage/package.use:media-libs/mesa -video_cards_radeon gallium gles
# portageq envvar VIDEO_CARDS
radeon
# emerge -pv media-libs/mesa[video_cards_radeon]

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R    ] media-libs/mesa-9.0  USE="classic egl gallium llvm nptl shared-glapi xorg -bindist -debug -g3dvl -gbm -gles1 -gles2 -openvg -osmesa -pax_kernel -pic -r600-llvm-compiler (-selinux) -vdpau (-wayland) -xa -xvmc" VIDEO_CARDS="radeon* -i915 -i965 -intel -nouveau -r100 -r200 -r300 -r600 -radeonsi -vmware" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

The following USE changes are necessary to proceed:
#required by media-libs/mesa[video_cards_radeon] (argument)
>=media-libs/mesa-9.0 video_cards_radeon

All right, I'm feeding package.use

And now :
Code:
emerge -pv mesa

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R    ] media-libs/mesa-9.0  USE="classic egl gallium llvm nptl shared-glapi xorg -bindist -debug -g3dvl -gbm -gles1 -gles2 -openvg -osmesa -pax_kernel -pic -r600-llvm-compiler (-selinux) -vdpau (-wayland) -xa -xvmc" VIDEO_CARDS="radeon* -i915 -i965 -intel -nouveau -r100 -r200 -r300 -r600 -radeonsi -vmware" 0 kB
