I'm sure some of you know about that just-now-starting (ok, it's been 4 days) gentoo project of forking (actually blueness took current udevsystemd git and is slicing systemd out of it) udev. The discussions take place in #gentoo-udev. There is no forums poll on the name and there is plenty of outside interest in the project.

So I thought we could have a poll here. There was a thread on the project in Gentoo Chat, but it got locked.

I'm liking the udev-pg (like udev-ng for vesa-ng, but pg seems better) and nudev/wedev.

Vote!

EDIT: The locked thread is https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-941466.html

Actually the locked thread is a rant, but that's how I (and problably a lot of other) knew about the project.

Actually the forums script made me cut the number of answers. Someone also proposed neudev besides nudev. Should've made it a on option. And I forgot about the "other". DAMN!

TBH, I'd still prefer to see udev forcibly taken over and put into
usr/udev in kernel tree - I don't trust that crowd at all and the fewer
critical userland bits they can play leverage games with, the safer we are.

Al, that -><- close to volunteering for maintaining that FPOS kernel-side...

This is incredibly entertaining

I voted for nudev, for no objective reason other than it makes clear that is a udev fork, is one of very few serious options and is not containing "-ng" (or "-pg" for that matter), because I hate that.

Btw, I mean all people involved are a little emotional and, well what the two dudes propose is really quite radical, but has anybody of you ever taken a deep breath and tried to look at the merits of such a change?
What I find the most dangerous is that it forces Linux through a bottleneck. If it gets implemented, it won't be possible to easily replace any of the components and we well be stuck with it forever.
But I do like the idea that init is unified across distros again ... now basically every distro has its own, for no good reason.

ichbinsisyphos, from what I've read (I've been on the channel since wednesday) they're after complete API compatibility of udev. Just with a free choice of init, keeping /usr etc.

And there is interest from Debian, Ubuntu. I think I've stumbled upon something even from some Fedora devs somewhere, although that seems weird given Red Hat is driving this madness. Anyway, I see it as a way to keep proper unification and modularity among most of the community.

aCOSwt, not really. The braindamaged fork has been started some time ago (someone on #gentoo-udev counted 9 forks already) and in a different way. This new project is ripping systemd out of current udevsystemd tree with all commit history and is probably going to be accepted (if working) by the Gentoo council. The one you mentioned doesn't seem to have a chance of going into mainline. There is a technical difference of approach, but there is also a political difference that could give it sustainability. As an official Gentoo project and those have a chance of spreading. So if we go for a long-term solution, this seems to be the way.

Srsly? Just new names? (yes, I've seen the very few contributions to the poll).

I know that's it's not compliant (I don't remember to what, but I remember the generic design of the rules), but I thought that (my very first) poll would get some attention if it constituted such a serious matter. I've honestly migrated from Gnome to XFCE recently (besides the cool E17) because the "Gnome OS" vision is frightening.

Keep in mind those Lenovo workstations that only boot Windows and RHEL!

Actually, I recall someone pointing out that there is no udev project anymore, as it has been assimilated by systemd, so the name is free

I still prefer nudev, but whatever.

Now all that's left is to rename systemd to "usdev".

Let me explain:

The European Union is awesome and the US is nothing more than a pathetic piece of shit, just like systemd. :)
