why would anyone go to Belize in the first place? No sane person would do so. Which means he is insane. And insane = guilty.
So whatever they are accusing him, he did it. For sure. _________________ Study finds stunning lack of racial, gender, and economic diversity among middle-class white males

Belize was to lower his taxes and to pursue a bohemian lifestyle of... stockpiling weapons?
It gets better. He says he didn't do it.
...I agree, he did it. |

He may have been framed by that gangster guy who doesn't like him and has been trying to get rid of him. _________________

He's a drug addict...he'll need those anti-virals by the looks of him. Hunter S Thompson would be proud. |

He paints himself as a missionary swooping in to save Belize from it's long history of piracy and corruption. I don't believe a word of it. |

I don't either. He's a wealthy, hedonistic, aging man living out his Peter Pan fantasies with drugs, prostitutes, crime, and his own miniature little empire.
But, in doing so, he has also stepped on the toes of the local organized crime boss. It may be too dangerous for that guy to just off a semi-famous American, especially after the semi-famous American has cleverly protected himself by making a big publicity stunt out of the fact that you want to kill him (McAfee organized a "meeting" with the crime boss, at which he attempted to patch things up between them, which he then widely publicized, I think to make sure people all the way back to the States knew that, if something happened to him, that guy did it). But, framing him, when he's made it so easy by being such an asshat? Not so dangerous. As this thread shows, most people wouldn't even think of it.
I'm not really claiming his innocent. I'm just saying people should be careful about jumping to conclusions in a case like this. He may have been doing drugs, but he apparently wasn't completely off his rocker. He had a lot to lose. Why would he gun down his next door neighbor, a man he was widely known to have a confrontational relationship with, and right in the man's own home, too? Seems to convenient to me. Seems an unlikely thing for a paranoid-thinking, intelligent man to do. _________________

I think that there should be a rule that when you base your empire around such things, you shouldn't be allowed to complain when you are devoured by your life circumstances.
Edit: removed strange new interpretation of old saying |

It is often the case of people making money in 1st world, then moving to 3rd world countries to enjoy bohemian and stress free lifestyle in nice climate, to end up in conflict with local crime figures. It has nothing to do with rich americans being ego and thinking highly of themselves, but it has to do with local sharks smelling money.
It happened to bunch of people from balkans as well, they were successful within something, got tired of the chase and moved back, opened a cafe or something, only to one day find themselves getting an offer they couldn't refuse. Or they were simply hustled by "potential business partners".
Once you are in environment of crime and corrupt local government and law officials as wealthy stranger (a mark), it is almost impossible to stay there and make a stand without commiting some sort of crime at some point.
The fact that he completely lost judgement and is doing drugs there is just asking for trouble.

Apologies to his neighbor's family and friends... somebody is dead, and no amount of jokes about stuffing tampons into your nose to avoid license renewal will change that. |
