Hi,

during installation of new server I got into problems with latest (9.11.2012) mini install CD for amd64.

As first, linux firmware package is not extracted and firmware can't be loaded. I found that linux-firmware.tar.gz has 0 file size.
(used USB stick, copied, extracted, got it working)

As second, SSHD won't start and will end with error message:
Code:
ssh-keygen: symbol lookup error: ssh-keygen: undefined symbol: EC_KEY_new_by_curve_name

Thrid problem, (vim not present) using nano editor will end up with:
Code:
nano: error while loading shared libraries: libmagic.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

libmagic* can't be found on /....

UPDATE: stage3-amd64-20121107 is missing /etc/make.conf

Any chance minimal CD will be ever functional as it should be? Because in this state it's useless....

Thanks..

Pavol

It is useful if used as described in the handbook . If you don't like it you can use any running linux of the same bitness as the intended install that supports chroot.

I am using gentoo on desktop and all my servers for several years. Something like this never happened. I know the installation process from memory and don't need handbook for it.

I have re-downloaded ISO, started install few times and firmware issue is still there and all the other points too.

Yes, exactly as documented in the portage news item dated 2012-09-09 - the news emerge would have notified you of each time you ran it on all those servers in the last 2 months?

-try using SystemRescueCD insted of the minimal .iso
-as per the news item (mentioned above), make.conf is no longer under /etc, but rather under /etc/portage (e.g. /etc/portage/make.conf)

the make.conf change does NOT affect existing installs. You can have make.conf either place (but do not simply symlink - pick one or the other).

so your existing installs, /etc/make.conf is still fine. I, personally, will keep using /etc/make.conf, mainly because I'm stubborn and despise change. But, new stage tarballs will have it under /etc/portage/make.conf

thank for SystemRescue hint, will try. But still, minimal CD should be fixed. It was a great way for installation and obviously (it's a automatic build ?) there is just something wrong with the build. I took a part iso and files and firmware archive is corrupted and the libmagic file missing.

I will stay with /etc/make.conf.... :) but to be honest, it makes more sense to have it in /etc/portage.. it is portage related, so I can see why it was moved.

I had issues with this using the current versions of the hardened stage3. Not sure if SSHD was already broken in the stage3 but during my installs I had to remerge/recompile OpenSSH.
This was because OpenSSL was probably updated to a newer version but OpenSSH was still linked to an older (incompatible) version of OpenSSL.

If any Gentoo developers are reading: might be an idea to create some QA/Regressions checks for these stages?

Was this with a fresh (stage3) install?

Try re-emerging openssh.

Yes, it was build 20121107

It can be done after chrooting only. Or not?

Sorry about the issue. There is a known bug with the minimal install CD right now. The recommendation to use SystemRescueCD is a good one.

all those errors (except the make.conf of course) happened after booting minimal install CD, not in stage3!

Yes, correct. It's thus not surprising that it's a problem with the Minimal Install CD and not the stage3.

is there any chance to get hands on the auto-build system used for this? I like to try to fix all those bugs and make my own mini-install CD..

It's in Portage: dev-util/catalyst. See also the Gentoo Catalyst Project Page. The lead developer is aware of the issues (which are, in fact, related to catalyst updates). If you notice anything in particular, you might want to chat with the folks on the #gentoo-releng IRC channel.

John linked to the nano bug above, but here is a link to the sshd bug:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=437480

I believe that the firmware.tar.gz problem is a new bug which still needs reporting.

I'm new to Gentoo (although not new to Linux), and the install-x86-minimal-20121213.iso file also contains a corrupt firmware.tar.gz. I see errors pop up for it as the cd is booting, and when I was trying to install I just get segfaults when I try to open nano.
