|
|
Quote: | President Obama's reelection last week has prompted a slew of requests to secede from the United States.
Using the Obama administration's own We the People website, nearly two dozen petitions have sprung up asking the Obama administration for permission to withdraw from the Union.
The two most popular petitions, Texas and Louisiana, have both drawn more than 10,000 signatures each as of Monday morning. The Texas petition needs only 7,000 more signatures to trigger an official White House response.
None of the petitions explicitly cite Obama's reelection as a reason for independence, but all were created after last week's elections.
"The citizens of the US suffer from blatant abuses of their rights such as the [National Defense Authorization Act], the [Transportation Security Administration], etc," the Texas petition charges. "Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect it's citizens' standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government." more... |

| Wasn't there some joker in here a while ago stating secession isn't permitted by the Constitution. |

Texas has 26 million people. I would think they could easily round up a million or so people to sign this. dmitchell, if you haven't signed it, shame on you. |

All 50 states (or at least the majority) should secede, then immediately form a corporation for brokering interstate cooperation. _________________ I can saw a woman in two, but you won't want to look in the box when I'm through.

Then we'd be pretty much another EU, but with a bunch of Red States mixed in. |

Why would citizens petition the White House for their state to secede? Surely secession bills have to be passed by state houses and probably requires a state referendum? So they should be petitioning their state legislatures. All of this smacks of wahwah our guy lost the election, woe is me, wahwah. Even though he wasn't 'their' guy anyway, in as much as Romney gives even less of a fuck about dumbass rednecks than the hired help, which in itself is less than zero fucks. _________________

@ dmitchell. What happened during Katrina was a flood. 12 petitions is not a flood. If 1 clerk can handle all the petitions and signatories by pencil and paper, then it's not a flood.
google "petition end faith schools" on the uk google website. The top 4 links are petitions. Let me tell you that I am underwhelmed by the amount of support banning faith schools in the UK gets (we are, of course, talking about publicly funded faith schools), and 12 won't constitute a flood. |
