Greetings everyone,

I'm a little confused at why emerge says, at the end of updating a package, that I need to update /etc/locale.gen. It says that I can read the emerge manpage (section CONFIG FILES), which almost exclusively discusses the protection feature on files/folders within /etc. Apparently I can potentially find a file in there that is similarly named to the file that I need to merge, although no such file can be found (similar to locale). RTFMing has done me no good :(

Can anyone point me in the right direction to make emerge happy?

Yep. Look under "Configuring Locales" in Chapter 8 of the Handbook.

Thanks for the swift reply john!

I thought I followed that whole guide to the letter, but I just tried it again at the link you gave me. I changed my locale (by the suggestion of locale -a) to read en_US.utf8 UTF-8 in /etc/locale.gen, although emerge still reports the same error. Originally, I believe I had it set to en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8.

Well I'll be darned, there was another locale waiting to be merged! There doesn't really seem to be much of a difference other than the fact that there were a lot of comments, was emerge just telling me because there was in fact a file waiting to be merged?

That's why exact error messages are important. PSYKORGASM picked up on something I didn't but (which I believe) I would have with the exact messages. I should've asked for 'em, though. Glad it's solved.

I appreciate the help from both of you :) I noticed that my error (or the general gist of it) popped up pretty fast on google when I was typing it in, so hopefully this will help other users with the same issue. I'll try to be more specific next time!
