I'm about to install Gentoo onto my new ESXi 5.0 update 1 server (I've not used Gentoo in a very long time). I'm just confused as to what is the best 'template' to use. I'm presented with either Other 2.6x Linux (64-bit) or Other Linux (64-bit) as my 2 most obvious choices.

However as we are upto 3.2+, I'd normally be tempted to chose Other Linux (64-bit). But if I do that, I'm not able to choose the VMXNET3 adapter, but when choosing Other 2.6x Linux (64-bit) I'm allowed to choose it. Which makes me think... is Other Linux (64-bit) for anything less than 2.4 as a fallback?

I'm not having much luck with finding an answer on this one. This wiki lists

Quote:
Guest operating system: Linux; Version: Other Linux 2.6.x kernel
on http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/VMware_Guest however this page is 3 years old when 2.6 was the current kernel.

Advice on which to choose for best stability with the latest kernel is appreciated.

as i understand it, the linux 2.6 option in ESXi, while it isn't worded this way, simply means "Linux, at least kernel 2.6"

I don't know offhand what is presented differently to the guest by selecting the 2.6 option, but I am assuming it presents the virtualized hardware in a different way that would only be supported as of 2.6 (and later of course)

so go with that.

Thanks. I'm going with that and just seeing how it goes. Taking it slow so that I get it all right.

I worded mine different but we have the same assumption. 2.6 is >= 2.6 and Other is for < 2.4 maybe. I feel safer if I'm not the only one that thinks of it this way.
