Hi all,
I have to reinstall gentoo on my laptop due to a hard drive failure. I'm currently chrooted and toward the end of the installation. After adding the user I set the password and this is the result:
Code: | chroot to ->(gentoo) # passwd bill
New password:
Retype new password:
passwd: Authentication token manipulation error
passwd: password unchanged
chroot to ->(gentoo) # |
I've never encountered this before
I did some googling, but couldn't find any answers. Hopefully, someone here can provide a clue

Adding dumb comment--The handbook waits to add ordinary user after the reboot
Code: | ls -al /etc/shadow* |
Check if you have got /etc/shadow file or not? If it does not exist then look for /etc/shadow-. If /etc/shadow- file does exist then copy it as /etc/shadow using the following command:
Code: | cp /etc/shadow- /etc/shadow |
Quote: | The pwconv command creates shadow from passwd and an optionally existing shadow |
IF you have no /etc/shadow files at all you can make a blank one and set the new username/password. You may have trouble with the "system" users; don't know. _________________ Defund the FCC. |

DONAHUE,
I just discovered that I made a BIG MISTAKE
I must have unpacked the tarballs as user because the permissions and owners were all wrong - too many to fix manually so I'll just start over.
