went through the handbook steps, kernal compiles, boots fine, i try and emerge kdebase-meta, kde-meta and all hell brakes loose, tons of slot errors and version mismatches ... i try to start masking and fixing the problems one by one but there are just too many.

It's not the tree. No (huge) issues here. Some questions:
  • Have you switched to the desktop/kde profile? This enables the USE flags for features that are typically necessary for KDE.
  • Have you done an "emerge --sync" and subsequently an "emerge -uDNv world"? New software installs work best on an up to date system. Note that there will be updates necessary after you switch profiles.
  • Have you previously successfully installed xorg-server and (optionally) your video card driver? The guides for X, drivers, and then desktop environment are meant to be followed in that order. Not explicitly said, I realize, but so nonetheless.
If all of that is true, then, well, actual error messages help. wgetpaste is your friend. And it would probably be good for you to post your "emerge --info" as well.
