I have an intel-hd-audio through the asus MIO 888 server audio card. I've using spdif out. When I start my system, I have to go into alsamixer and unmute the spdif line. Alsa see the sound card fine, and I'm loading the drivers as modules. When I open up the pulse audio controls inside gnome 3.4, it see my two nvidia 460GTX's and a "Built in-audio Analog Stereo" card. I'm not sure what this built in analog stereo card is suppose to be, but I'm guessing that is my intel hd audio, just not properly configured. I get sound output, through alsa, but I have no volume controls through gnome and no virtual mixer, so I get only one audio stream at a time.

I don't have a ~/.asoundrc file, should I add one? Before I reinstalled gentoo, I was running it fine. I never set up anything special, just configured alsa and went, pulse audio just "worked", which I was happy about before. I'm not sure where pulse audio logs it's files either, as I've setup metalog but nothing for pulse audio is logged in /var/log. I'm not using pulse audio in systemwide mode either. If someone could point me in the direction to start trouble shooting I'd be much abliged.

When you open alsamixer and then F6 do you see your card?

I do, and sounds works through alsa. I never bothered with pulseaudio until gnome 3 started requiring it. I also emerged alsa-pluginsbut there doesn't seem to be a pulseaudio use flag anymore, and my user is in the audio group.

I will show you mine if you show me yours;

Code:

 emerge -pv media-plugins/alsa-plugins

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R    ] media-plugins/alsa-plugins-1.0.25-r1  USE="ffmpeg pulseaudio -debug -jack -libsamplerate -speex" 0 kB

Something seems to be wrong, I don't get any use flags. Let me resync my portage tree. (edit: After a resync alsa-plugins shows the use flags, udated below, and I've reinstalled it with Pulseaudio but pulse audio still seems not to identify my sound card, while alsa does.

Code:
# emerge -pv media-plugins/alsa-plugins

[ebuild   R    ] media-plugins/alsa-plugins-1.0.26  USE="ffmpeg libsamplerate pulseaudio speex -debug -jack" 0 kB
