So, I've been trundling my way through installing Gentoo to my first box. It's likely not the same architecture as yours, but this problem doesn't have to do with architectures. That's the beauty of the whole Gentoo approach. My problem goes like this:

I have a root filesystem on partition 4, with kernels from which I boot on partition 5 (long story as to why). Partition 4 is ext4, partition 5 is ext2. I've pointed my bootloader at the kernels on 5, and they assume control magnificently. However, this is the point at which they fail to do anything else.
I have three kernels, and they give me two separate problems. The first problem, upon bootloader handoff, gives me a white screen with about 5 lines of black text. The last line is "returning from prom_init..." and it never changes after that. I'd like to know where exactly in the boot process I am at this point, so I know what's not happening.
The second problem (from only one of the three) is, after I've made it past the white screen, a black one appears. The last line of this wall of white text is "Console: colour dummy device 80x25". A white line covers the bottom of the screen under this text, and nothing else happens.

Essentially, what I'm hoping for is that someone out there knows why my kernels refuse to go further. That will tell me so much about what I need to do next.

You'll need to provide more information. Post your kernel .config.

I will do so tomorrow. Unfortunately, I'm trying to keep everything quiet for my roommate who is studying for an exam. Powercycles of a macintosh could get annoying. I skimmed through that file, and in case it helps, support for ext2, ext3, and ext4 is reported as enabled in the kernel, not just a module.

In the meantime, I'd like to see if I have the general ordering down of a system boot. Just humor me here, please.
On pressing of the power button, hardwired programs come online. Among other things, they begin a search for persistent memory, looking for a bootloader program. Once they find one, they complete system test, and hand off control to the bootloader.
Once the bootloader has control, its job is to load the kernel and set it up so that it can continue building the system. That means it feeds the kernel with the location of the root filesystem and any optional kernel arguments (and perhaps an initramfs, though I understand such images are not usually necessary anymore).
Then, the kernel, armed with a starting point, loads and maintains all other programs and information necessary for a proper system to run. This includes user profiles, mouse and keyboard interfaces, graphical display programs, and all the other various bells and whistles.

From the symptoms I currently see, everything is going fine until the third paragraph. The kernel loads, explores available memory, and merrily reports its findings to the screen. But it dies upon attempting to make a colour dummy device (I'm assuming that's an intermediate interface on the way to either a standard fullscreen terminal or X11). Is there any readily apparent reason it might do that?

The kernel .config will be up within the next 24 hours. Thanks for the help.

Post your yaboot.conf, just to make sure that it's finding the kernel and rootfs in the first place.

EDIT: Because of my stupidity.

Sorry about the late reply. Here's the yaboot.conf

Code:

  GNU nano 2.2.6      File: /sys/kernel/debug/etc/yaboot.conf

#bootstrap partition. Defined for yaboot's config scripts.
boot=/dev/sda2

#tells openfirmware what partition to look in for the boot program. Main device, partition 2
device=/ht@0,f2000000/pci@9/k2-sata-root@c/k2-sata@0/disk@0:
partition=5
root=/ht@0,f2000000/pci@9/k2-sata-root@c/k2-sata@0/disk0:4

delay=5
timeout=80
defaultos=linux

#now we tell yaboot where it is located on the root filesystem
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot
magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot

#Finally, tell it where to look for a valid kernel.
image=/kernel-3.4.9-gentoo
        label=Gentoo

image=/ht@0,f2000000/pci@9/k2-sata-root@c/k2-sata@0/disk@0:5,/kernel-3.4.9.v1-gentoo
        label=Gentoov1

image=/ht@0,f2000000/pci@9/k2-sata-root@c/k2-sata@0/disk@0:5,/kernel-3.4.9-gentoo
        label=longGentoo

image=/ht@0,f2000000/pci@9/k2-sata-root@c/k2-sata@0/disk@0:5,/kernel-3.4.9-gentoo
        label=longkernel
        root=/ht@0,f2000000/pci@9/k2-sata-root@c/k2-sata@0/disk@0:4

enablecdboot
enableofboot

I have multiple entries (and a couple of kernels) because I've been poking at this problem for a couple weeks. Been trying everything, only recently got it to -almost- boot using the original kernel. Gentoov1 never returns from prom_init on the white boot screen after yaboot does its job, the others give me the problem originally described.

For your knowledge, my root is ext4 on sda4. Kernels reside on sda5 in an ext2.

Firstly, keep in mind that I have no experience with yaboot. So I'm just throwing around some ideas, maybe until someone more knowledgeable sees the thread. Why is boot pointed at sda2? Should it not be pointed at sda5?

EDIT: spelling

Sorry about the late response. Two jobs, a girlfriend, and the launch of ACIII and Halo4 can really eat up time spent on any other hobbies.

Yaboot works differently from grub. That "boot" line is actually only there because it's the partition upon which yaboot and its config file will be placed when you run "ybin" to set up the boot partition. The boot partition is where OpenFirmware (early '00's Apple's version of BIOS) looks to find a bootloader. It won't read anything but HFS+, so you have to have a separate partition in that filescheme to slip your bootloader there.

Funny thing is, yaboot doesn't seem to read ext4 filesystems very well, or at least it doesn't anymore (see this thread). For this reason, I've moved my kernels off my root ext4 partition and onto a /boot ext2 partition.
Yaboot is correctly starting the boot sequence, I can see the kernel's output. The kernel's just getting stuck somewhere along the way to mounting the root.
Questions:
1) What, besides the kernel, should exist on /boot? Are there any configuration files used by a kernel (like fstab) while booting to a usable environment (at this stage, the command line)?
2) Since I compiled the kernel before I'd made any partition changes, are there any setup scripts I should rerun to make the kernel understand why it's so lonely on that one partition?

Feel free to ask me anything about my setup. I'm fairly new to Linux, especially Gentoo, and I end up learning a lot answering questions I haven't though of asking.

Okay, glad to hear that it's actually booting now. Keep in mind I have no knowledge of PPC Linux, so I'm learning too. Could you post the output of where the boot stops? Could you also post your /etc/fstab as well. You should not need anything other than your kernel in /boot.

Sure thing. Here's the last paragraph before it all hangs and my fans go full blast in panic mode:

Code:

Setup Done
[boot]0015 Setup Done
PERCPU: Embedded 11 pages/cpu@c000000000b00000 s15104 r0 d29952 u524288

Policy Zone: DMA
Kernel command line: root=/dev/sda4
PID hash table entries: 4096 (order: 3, 32768 bytes)
freeing bootmem node 0
Memory: 2989304k/3145728k available (6924k kernel code, 156424k reserved, 960k data, 484k bss, 320k init)
SLUB: Genslabs=15, HWalign=128, Order=0-3, MinObjects=0, CPUs=2, Nodes=256
Hierarchical RCU implementation.
NR_TRQS:512 nr_irqs:512 16
mpic: Setting up MPIC " MPIC 1  " version 1.2 at f8040000, max 2 CPUs
mpic: ISU size: 124, shift: 7, mask: 7f
mpic: Initializing for 124 sources
mpic: Setting up HT PICs workarounds for U3/U4
mpic:   - HT:07.0 [0x90] vendor 106b device 0053 has 86 irqs
clocksource: timebase mult[1e000005] shift[24] registered
Console: colour dummy device 80x25

Then there's one line of off-white space, and nothing further happens.
I notice my last line is the same as Gentoo's minimal CD, just before it loads the command line from which I've done everything else in the handbook. It seems as though my kernel can't find its root, even though it's listed as /dev/sda4 in the above code.

Here's /etc/fstab:
Code:

<fs>                           <mountpoint>          <type>    <opts>                    <dump/pass>

/dev/sda4                        /                    ext4       defaults,noatime          0    1
/dev/sda3                        none                 swap       sw                        0    0
/dev/sda5                        /boot                ext2       noatime,noauto            0    2
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0               /mnt/cdrom           auto       noatime,user              0    0

shot in the dark - try enabling DEVTMPFS and DEVTMPFS_MOUNT in the kernel, recompile, copy to the appropriate spot, etc

in your case it's never even getting to the point of starting the init system

DISCLAIMER: that really is a shot in the dark, canned response on my behalf. When I see "trouble booting", and see devtmpfs isn't enabled, it's a fairly safe go to; even if it doesnt fix the immediate problem, itll likely fix the next problem

I'm really out of ideas, everything looks correct, my guess is that something relating to your HDD is not compiled into the kernel. Sometimes you think you have everything and you don't. Try looking at your .config again, and see if there's something you may have missed. It doesn't hurt to compile extra things in anyways, (aside from kernel size). Also try what cach0rr0 said, devtmpfs seems to through people off who aren't aware of it. I wish I knew, but perhaps someone more knowledgeable can help (which is pretty much anyone else :) ).

I'm basically thinking back to when the stage3 tarballs for x86/amd64 had their issues, and that required manually creating /dev/{null,console,zero}, or, enabling devtmpfs and devtmpfs_mount. Those issues looked very similar to this.

Worth a shot. Maybe the ppc stage tarballs were never updated with that fix, who knows.

cach0rr0, your shot in the dark was a bulls-eye. Solved.
Also, hcaulfield, thanks for the sounding board. Your questions drove my research, helped me learn.
Kudos to you both for tackling a problem on a foreign architecture.

the ancillary benefit of having to disappear from the forums for a few months for IRL stuff - antiquated knowledge makes it much easier to solve old problems!

Now that I'm back-ish and thumbing through some of the threads, man, a whole heap of stuff just plain passed me by. I've got some catching up to do...
