Last weekend after an update (~x86) my KDE desktop stopped working properly. KDM shows up for a few seconds and then crashes, falling back to console. Using startx to fire up the desktop works. The desktop looks functional but there is no proper rendering. It's not possible to change settings, have a usable file manager etc..

The output of glxinfo and glxgears looks ok as well as the output of Xorg.0.log. Only the kdm.log shows an "AIGLX ERROR" not finding the correct drivers which are definetely there.

I've compiled mesa with the use flags for i915 and i945 just to play it safe and tried "classic" and "gallium" settings without success and I've already set rc-update add udev-mount sysinit because of the udev update which caused some trouble for some users.

Hope someone has an idea and can help.

As I realized today i965_dri.so is really missing in /usr/lib/dri. I stumbled over this after checking my Xorg.0.log again and my /usr/lib/dri.

Removed the stale i965_dri.so file in /usr/lib/dri ran "make clean" and compiled the kernel again. No error messages in Xorg.0.log but the kdm.log reports a Dbus connection error.

Enabled AUDITSYSCALL in the kernel which was mysteriously disabled.

Trying an "emerge -av1 $(qlist -IC dbus gobject-introspection)" now.

All the solutions I found on the internet or here in this forum didn't solve the problem. After 5 days of fiddling around I decided to start a new installation.

I seem to have experienced an accumulation of errors / and or mistakes which happened all at the same time, like an update world, then maybe a misconfiguration of the kernel, and then the dbus error reported from KDM.

The graphics issue with the missing i965_dri.so was solved by cleaning up and compiling the kernel again. After that the Xorg.0.log and everything else related to it was working again.

The dbus error messages reporting that the connection to dbus was lost seem to be related to different parts of KDE as I read while searching for a solution. In my case KDM was affected.

Running ~arch is asking for problems IMHO.
Better use /etc/portage/package.keywords to unmask individual packages.
Gerard.

Probably you're right. But I must say that for the most of the time, except at the beginng of my Gentoo exprerience I always used ~arch and everything went quite well.

But anyhow - just switched to x86_64 for the first time of my life and disabled the ~arch flag. System is happily compiling away, the coffee is hot, the weather outside is grey.... :)

Do you mean kde is running alright?
The messages in .xsession-errors are mostly nonsense and usually can be disregarded.
I wish kde would clean this up.In kde3 I had always less than 1KB errors,now it sometimes is 100KB but running ok.
Gerard.

No, the desktop is still nearly useless. Only Firefox and Thunderbird work normally. Everything Kde related ist screwed somehow. Reading some posts about those error messages when starting an application from console are all about something Qt related.

This is what dbus comes up with:

Code:

 # dbus-monitor --session
Failed to open connection to session bus: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

There's something wrong with your system,hard to tell what.
Follow the handbook to re-install and don't skip over things.
Gerard.

Ok. Fresh install sticking strictly to the handbook.

- on startup KDM crashes
- Desktop only comes up with startx
- only usable programms are Thunderbird and Firefox, the rest isn't usable because everything is garbled somehow.

Meanwhile I'm beginning to believe that either I'm making an absolutely stupid mistake or I don't know what I ran into.

Without dbus it won't work.
Further "QNativeImage" looks like you are using the native backend for qt4, please try "raster". Everything is garbled on my system, too, when I switch to native. ("eselect qtgraphicssystem" and "systemsettings -> desktop effects")
Then an opcode "X_CopyArea" is bad. This is just a shot in the dark, but did you enable KMS for your kernel and the relevant AGP/DRI sections? Is MTRR activated? Like this:
Code:
sed-notebook ~ # egrep "(MTRR=|KMS|965|AGP|DRM)" /usr/src/linux/.config | grep -v "#"
CONFIG_MTRR=y
CONFIG_AGP=y
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=y
CONFIG_DRM=y
CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER=y
CONFIG_DRM_I915=y
CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS=

Thanks, but I can't use the KDE desktop setting because I can't use the settings because of the garbled graphics. I'll try the eselect thing.

My settings in "eselect qtgraphicssystem list" showed "raster" as default. Trying opengl ended up with the same weird graphics again which remind me of the times where the KDE desktop was set to direct rendering you had to disable it to have a usable desktop if you didn't have the capable hardware for it.
Setting it to native worked for about 20 minutes. Anyhow Yamakuzure, I've now got perspective where to begin with. BTW, Yamakuzure, I'm from Hamburg as well.

Well, after a little help from this thread: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-941366.html I got everything up and running again. Magic_SysRq_Key probably did the trick. But before I noticed some improvement by upgrading packages (mesa and so on) and playing with mesa settings classic/gallium and qtgraphics native/opengl/raster.

At the moment, that is what works here is setting mesa to classic, qtgraphics to native. In the Systemsettings I've got OpenGL and Native and OpenGL2 enabled.

I'm happy with that for now and have no desire at the moment to check all those possible combinations between mesa/qtgraphics and Systemsettings KDE :) .
