I am sorry if this is being discussed already. packages.gentoo.org seems to be down for at least a couple of days already. Are there any plans of getting it back?

Yes, I've been noticing *lots* of slowdown lately. The planet site didn't work for days, and blogs, packages, and forums have been less than solid. I even had a couple of connection errors just bringing up the login page before I could post this message.

I wonder if there is some wider problem. The web server where I work has been logging a lot of 408 responses. What's the status code of 408? I had to look that one up. That's "Request Timeout". RFC 2616 has "The client did not produce a request within the time that the server was prepared to wait. The client MAY repeat the request without modifications at any later time." What I see in the Apache log is an IP address, a timestamp, that 408 status code, and nothing else (no first line, no size, no user agent, no referrer). This suggests to me that we never received any part of the HTTP request header--we got part or all of the three-way handshake and then nothing more.

Is it distance that the packets have to travel that does it? I did geo-ip location on a number of the IP's involved and found a bunch from Europe and Asia--but lots more of them in the United States and a number of them--yikes!--right here in Florida. The closest IP I found was only 70 miles away.

Sometimes it appears that even Slashdot is being Slashdotted.

So what's causing all this strangeness? I wish I knew. I'm glad to see though that I'm not the only one noticing a slowdown.

For days I have been getting 404s. Is it my domain name server? Has the site been hacked? Server down? Moved to a new location?

No, it has been taken offline.

The server it was run from had memory failures and died. Everything was copied off of it, and moved to another server.
Unfortunately there were multiple problems and failures. Finally it had to be taken offline. It will come back up again soon with the replacement that was done in last summers GSOC program. The infrastructure servers will be up very soon that it was intended to be installed on. It is an updated and improved version, integrated with a few other applications that will share some of it's info and services.

On a semi-related note: what's with archives.g.o ? That service has been broken for several months already.

Seems packages.gentoo.org is down for quite some time now, getting the following page:

Code:
Empty Page!
If you expected a real website instead something must be wrong. :-(

Is this a known problem?

Except znurt.org has a problem too and isn't being updated. Just use eix instead.
