Whenever I install a new application, it is shown in the lxpanel menu, but the games are not. Also, I cannot execute games from the "run" option of this menu.

The user is in the games group and the executables are in the PATH, so I don't know where's the problem. Any ideas?

I have tried copying .desktop files from /usr/share/applications to ~/.local/share/applications, with no results.

This problem is also reported in this post in "Gamers & Players", but I think it belongs here, since it has almost nothing to do with games, but with LXDE.

Hi,

I have the Games submenu in the lxpanel menu.

what happens when you "run" a game from a console, I guess that works, right?

did you try to run lxpanel from a console, to see any warnings/errors?

regards
ribx

Yes, ribx, I can run the games from the console.

I haven't tried running lxpanel from a console, but I will try asap (I don't have the computer with me) and see what happens.

After logging in a lxde session, I have tried the following steps, with surprising and annoying results:

  • I use the "Run" option in the lxpanel menu.
  • I type "ltris" (one of the games that I have installed) and I get an error message (not found).

Then, from lxterminal, I kill lxpanel, and then run it from the terminal. lxpanel runs silently, no messages are shown. Then I repeat the steps above, and now the "Run" dialog suggests the complete name of the game and, when I press enter, the game is started as expected.

So, in summary:

  • From lxpanel, I cannot run games, and the "games" group is not shown in the menu.
  • If I start lxpanel from a terminal, I can run games, but the "games" group is still not shown.

strider2003,

If you have an entry in /usr/share/applications for the app then try
Code:
xdg-desktop-menu install /usr/share/applications/appname.desktop

If you don't have a desktop file there you should be able to create a simple one to launch it by looking through some of them

BillWho, I have them.

I did as you suggest, but I get no results.

I run this command
Code:
xdg-desktop-menu install /usr/share/applications/appname.desktop

and I get no output. Then I open the menu, and I can't find any new entries. After loggin out and then logging in again, I open the menu again and still no new entries.

I don't understand why only games are not shown, being the user in the games group, and being able to run all games from the console.

strider2003,

Strange to hear that it didn't work - it worked for me with VirtualBox. For some reason It wasn't showing, but executing xdg-desktop-menu install /usr/share/applications/virtualbox.desktop fixed it.

Did you try the --novendor option :?: Did you check the categories entry :?: That's the entry that appears to determine where the entry will reside.
Code:
root@gentoo-gateway applications # cat calculator-calculator.desktop|grep Categories
Categories=Education;Science;Calculator;

Maybe changing the category to an existing menu group to test it :? The only other suggestion I can make at this time is to look over the man file

Hello,

I installed a new machine and I'm facing again this issue (with AlienArena this time).

Looks like an LXPannel bug ...

Bye

Hum, really strange.
I did some installation for something that don't have anything to do with games ... and "Games" category appeared :?
Exactly what happened last time.

Hum ...
