| Hello, I'm using KDE4 (latest version from the unstable repo). My problem is that for some weird reason I can't edit *some* files and this is kinda random. Right now I tried to edit a regular text file, but Kate or KWrite won't let me edit that file, it has 644 as permissions. I'm not new to Gentoo or Linux, maybe a bit new to KDE, since I've been using GNOME since 2004, switched to KDE recently as I hate this new user interface, anyways I've never ever had this weird problem before. Any help is appreciated, thank you. |

644 would be read/write for the owner - who's the owner of the file you're trying to edit  maybe it's just a matter of setting ownership.

That's very odd. I don't use Kate or KWrite so I can't speak to them, but do you get the same idiosyncrasy with nano

| Yeah, I tried using nano, but it's hard as hell to copy and paste. I'd rather click click click, you know, it's faster than use your keyboard to be where you wanna edit that text file. Of course I use nano for editing system files though. I was just wondering what was wrong with these apps. Thank you for your replies. |

I was just trying to narrow down the problem - I wouldn't expect you to use nano or vi for everyday text editing
I was going to ask if you changed your /home directory permissions, but you mentioned it was kinda random so that can't be the problem.
Did you check bug reports for KDE Kate or KWrite
I can't think of anything else at this time

Ok, really silly question:
Use dolphin or konquorer to check your file permissions. Are they correct?

I'm going to check the KDE bugzilla and see if anyone else has this problem. Google didn't return any results (or maybe I was using the wrong keywords). Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes they are correct, Dolphin shows me the following.
Owner: Can read & write.
Group: Can read.
Others: Can read. |
