Yes, there's prefix you say.

Prefix is great as far as it goes. I use it, and I thank Fabian and the others for a remarkable system. However, inevitably it has limitations; mainly that you can only install pure unprivileged userland stuff, so anything that wants to install /usr/init.d scripts, add to /usr/passwd etc. is verboten. So I'm looking to set up zone and set up something `deeper' that allows those privileged operations. I suppose something like a standard Gentoo installation rather than prefix.

There have been efforts to bring something Gentoo like to the Solaris kernel, called OSUnix (using pkgcore). But that project has been abandoned.

Even the website is now defunct. Some remnants can be admired at https://bitbucket.org/osunix/

Getting init scripts on prefix is possible with some limitations, but requires tinkering: http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/OpenRC/Prefix
