I have fresh installed KDE4 through "emerge kdebase-startkde" and typed "exec startkde" in the first line of /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

Like NeddySeagon tells me in this discussion, I'm using the mach64 driver https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-937192.html on a Sony VAIO PCG-971M
ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/manuals/Notebooks/FX/FX400/FX400_H_UK.pdf

Only some applications are working good, actually I only emerged konsole and kate: kate works, konsole doesn't.

Kickoff, the application launcher looks very bad: it's smaller than the screens width (and looks weird), and to interact with it, I have to do like if it's were larger; i.e. to open the calendar, on the right side of kickoff, I have to point the mouse in the (empty) bottom-right corner of the screen.

I emerged imagemagick to take a screenshot, but the image and the effective screen appearance are different!

here is the screenshot
http://www.leonixyz.net/screenshot.png
here is how it's really is, please note the unreadable font in the konsole (photo1) and the unreadable popup down the mouse pointer of photo2 (if the background were white, the kickoff would be looks so bad too)

By searching Google I found that all kde configuration files are stored in ~/.kde/share/config, and the only "strange" configuration file I can see is the following, but I'm too newbie to change it without knowing what/why I'm doing that. There are two different width and
Code:

# cat /root/.kde4/share/config/systemsettingsrc
[MainWindow]
Height 600=601
Height 768=769
MenuBar=Disabled
State=AAAA/wAAAAD9AAAAAAAABAAAAALcAAAABAAAAAQAAAAIAAAACPwAAAABAAAAAgAAAAEAAAAWAG0AYQBpAG4AVABvAG8AbABCAGEAcgEAAAAA/////wAAAAAAAAAA
ToolBarsMovable=Disabled
Width 1024=1025
Width 800=801

any helps were very appreciated

You should install kdebase-meta as simply installing kdebase-startkde is insufficient to get a complete and working desktop. It looks to me like you are suffering a partial install.

That is what the base meta is for. its essential software only. KDE is not great for light weight installs.

EDIT: you can slim it down a good deal with the proper use flags. These are the ones I have unset. Note that several are specific to gnome in order to prevent the default options on some packages.

Here is what I have set in my use flags:

-gnome -gtk -bluetooth -semantic-desktop -doc -samba -networkmanager -pulseaudio -handbook -introspection -upower -udisks -consolekit -policykit -gnome-keyring

red = I would disable
blue = consider disabling
green = probably should NOT disable.
black = not really kde dependent, more system level but may affect kde

I don't have Bluetooth hardware on my box, so support goes. The *kits are considered evil by some people so they are not installed on my box because I happen to agree. Pulseaudio is similar. The handbook use flag controls the help entries from kde. Pretty, but mostly unneeded. The upower and udisks are probably something you will disagree with. They have to do with auto detection and power control. Personally, I don't need them since I run a desktop and I don't like their dependencies. For a laptop, I would keep them. Some things, like samba, you need it only if you actually plan to use it.

The really big one you want is -semantic-desktop as that is were most of the bloat in KDE comes from.

I emerged kdebase-meta over kdebase-startkde with the use flags you said me, but the problem persists.
Maybe it's because the first packages were compiled with wrong use flags?
How can i safely uninstall KDE and all its components to re-emerge them all with the right use flags?

thanks

Well, you can try changing your desktop theme under systemsettings ->Worksapce appearance or try the Lancelot or Classic Menu launchers. As far I can tell, the Kickoff application launcher is not too configurable.

As a major point here, do NOT run KDE (or any GUI application) as root! I just noticed that you used cat /root/.kde4/... indicating you were logged in as root.

A user for everyday use has many advantages, including not being able to destroy your entire system without using sudo or su. As for your fear about changing .kde4/ files, they are safe to change. If you mess something up and kde does not start or acts wierd, you can delete the directory and it will be regenerated on your next log in.

after running depclean, because of getting an error very similar to the following,
i tried to emerge --update --newuse --deep --with-bdeps=y @world
and then to redo depclean, but this is what i get...
should i redo a full system update and then depclean another time?

Code:
 * Dependencies could not be completely resolved due to
 * the following required packages not being installed:
 *
 *   >=kde-base/kdelibs-4.4:4[-aqua] pulled in by:
 *     sys-auth/polkit-kde-agent-0.99.0
 *
 *   >=kde-base/oxygen-icons-4.4:4[-aqua] pulled in by:
 *     sys-auth/polkit-kde-agent-0.99.0
 *
 * Have you forgotten to do a complete update prior to depclean? The
 * most comprehensive command for this purpose is as follows:
 *
 *   emerge --update --newuse --deep --with-bdeps=y @world
 *
 * Note that the --with-bdeps=y option is not required in many
 * situations. Refer to the emerge manual page (run `man emerge`)
 * for more information about --with-bdeps.
 *
 * Also, note that it may be necessary to manually uninstall
 * packages that no longer exist in the portage tree, since it may
 * not be possible to satisfy their dependencies.

first try emerge -c sys-auth/polkit-kde-agent (note the lower case -c) since if you are not running KDE you may no longer need it. If it still does not want to be removed, then yes the recommended command should fix the problem.
