Any way to workaround this bug

http://trac.enlightenment.org/e/ticket/1212

with the current ebuilds from enlightenment overlay?

Yeah. Try this:
Code:
mkdir -p /etc/portage/patches/dev-libs/e_dbus
cd /etc/portage/patches/dev-libs/e_dbus
wget -c http://trac.enlightenment.org/e/raw-attachment/ticket/1212/e_dbus_config_tests.patch

Then edit /etc/portage/bashrc and put this:
Code:
# Enable user patches for ebuilds that don't support it
# mkdir -p /etc/portage/patches/abc/xyz
# cp 999-mypatch.patch /etc/portage/patches/abc/xyz/
post_src_prepare() {
     epatch_user
}

For the record, I just built e_dbus here. And it built fine. So, this patch is not required.

Thank you ppurka. I have updated my overlays and now it also compiles without the need for the patch.

Long time no update in this thread?!

Anyways, I'd like two know two things, first, of the many overlays existing, which would you recommend?

Secondly, does e currently have a working login manager? Years ago, there used to be entrance, than it got killed of. Then there was apparently elsa, which I never tried, and which has lately been rebranded to entrance, but it's not in the overlay provided by @vapier.

heard there is/was going to be one, don't know the status. I got quite fond of a metallic black theme I made for entrance ages ago so continued using it. it requires a couple musty e libs (epeg, epsilon iirc). I put entrance/its libs in an isolated area and call entranced with a wrapper to set ld* and bin path. works fine and still looks great. if you want I can look up which rev of the libs I used to compile it (doesn't need them all, ~25M installed; and I build e from svn so couldn't say how/if entrance can be built w/old ebuilds).

There's an option to screen lock right after startup, that might be good enough.

I've found two wiki articles about e17 install. http://fr.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/E17 and http://www.gentoo-wiki.info/Enlightenment_DR17 .
First question: Is there some difference between E17 and DR17 and if they are the same, which one is the right guide?

E17 and Enlightenment DR17 are just two names for the same thing.

Follow the directions here: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/E17
You may use the enlightenment overlay, which is maintained by both upstream and Gentoo devs.

Well, i tested my X with xterm and it's alright. Now, I want to install E17 exclusively. I gave:
Code:

# emerge layman
# layman -S
# echo "source/usr/portage/local/layman/make.conf" >> /etc/make.conf
# layman -f

And then:
Code:
# layman -a enlightenment
* Program "/usr/bin/svn" not found
* Failed to add overlay "enlightenment".
* Error was: Adding overlay "enlightenment" failed!

What should I add?

OK. So, this is what I've done so far:
Code:
# emerge layman
# layman -fa enlightenment
# layman -S

Created the folder /etc/portage/package.keywords where I putted the package.keywords.file and made:
Code:
# cd /et/cportage/package.keywords
# ln -s /var/lib/layman/enlightenment/scripts/package.keywords.livecvs enlightenment

I created a /etc/portage/package.use folder where I putted the enlightenment.use file with the following content:
Code:
dev-libs/e_dbus X
media-libs/evas X jpeg png svg xpm fontconfig
dev-libs/ecore X curl

Code:

# emerge subversion
# emerge -pv x11-wm/enlightenment
# emerge -av --keep-going x11-wm/enlightenment

Code:
# emerge -av eina eet evas ecore efreet embryo edje eeze e_dbus enlightenment
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Why? I missed something?

And another question: Why I see e16 everywhere and not e17? :?

Edit: I logged in and I'm into e16 and not e17? How can I get E17?

Well, seems you didn't properly unmask it.

Are you sure you set the keywords right? http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/E17#Keywords

Alright, I've already created the folder, but I putted inside the symlinks for enlightenment and enlightenment-niifaq. There is also the regular "package.keywords.file" , but I guess I don't know what else to put inside.

After the latest update I have two new problems with e17:

  • Desktop (fileman) shows the content of '/' not '/home/user/Desktop' and I don't know how to change that, except by removing ~/.e.
  • e17 crashes after resuming from Suspend to RAM, i.e. screen is black, only mouse pointer is visible. Unlocking the screen (blindly) seems to work, then (most of the time) e17 crashes and I can hit the 'Recover' button. Recovering works, but the dialogue does not always show up and Ctrl+Alt+End to restart e17 does not work. Resuming from Suspend to RAM works, when e17 is not running (i.e. only X and Slim running). This problem persists if I remove ~/.e.

I use the live-cvs ebuilds of the enlightenment overlay.

Better report it to the ML. Also try without any extra modules and without composite to see which factor is affecting e.

I have news on this:
I unloaded composite, suspended to RAM and could resume the system without problems. Then - while the resumed session still was running (i.e. without logout or reboot) - I loaded composite again and my screen started flickering until e17 crashed and recovered.

In the Composite Module, I had OpenGL Rendering set. Now I changed this to Software Rendering and everything works.

I think it is a problem with the nvidia-drivers which I upgraded to 302.17-r1 to get randr suppot (my next graphics adapter will be ati).

Only the Desktop content confusion persists.

After installing kde-base/kdebase-runtime-meta and all its dependencies the icons of most applications are lost in e17. I can see them in kmenuedit, though.

Is there a way to get back all icons in e17 menus and everthing launcher?

All I could find is a way to assign an icon to a single application. But I would prefer an automated way rather then assigning them by hand.

Set an icon theme in e. Can't remember, but it's there in settings.
