Meh. They've finally forced the fugly replacement interface for gmail. Now I've got to look for a client or alternative service that uses the 'conversation' model.

You can still load the basic html version and make it default. Although I do like the cozy setting with the eggplant theme

How? I've been 'reverting' for quite a while now, but I no longer see that option.

Cozy, Compact, Comfortable, doesn't seem to make a difference.

Oh, _that_ basic HTML. I'm using it now, and it is worse than the good gmail interface, but so far better than the New Coke. I don't see myself being able to use it for long though... it's going to force me to find something else. Google.die.die.die.

You could enable pop/smtp access to your account and use a email client instead.

I haven't looked for a client which does 'conversations.' I tried Tbird a while back, and it wanted to download thousands of spam messages, so I didn't quite set that up correctly. Not sure how well it recognizes labels.

It recognizes the labels as folders and they show up in your list of mailboxes. Tbird works pretty well with gmail/IMAP.

How did you get it to not download spam? I'm assuming it doesn't download trash.

You can set it up to load gmail's trash, but it definitely doesn't download gmail's spam folder by default. You can also set which folders will be visible in an IMAP/POP connection by going to you gmail's settings.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I didn't set anything specific, so maybe it was the Trash it was downloading.

I see a shiny new blue colored "See Realtime Coverage" button.

And of course they've completely killed the usefulness of News.

Anyone use an aggregator which:
- allows an option to not display pointless images.
- provides useful summaries.
- uses filler space in moderation.

Okay what's the new layout like... No, shut the fuck up, I won't download Google Chrome; eat me... Hrm, not bad, actually. It's easy to follow and whitespace isn't always bad.

Now about Gmail...that doesn't seem to have changed. I thought it had.

Anyway, fuck Google. I spend more time dismissing solicitations to download Chrome than anything else.

Firefox + DuckDuckGo = win

For me, the images and white space make for an interface which is much less usable. Obviously some white space is good. They previously allowed the option for "headlines only" which didn't show images. The old interface had a reasonable amount of white space. The new interface forces the useless images and adds excessive white space. And that was using Firefox. I use Chrome as little as possible.

They've completely ruined it, this time. And you don't have a way to revert to an older view either.

For a few days you could trick it by going to a foreign country's url and then specify the language as an option, but obviously they were having none of that. Since the end of June when it first switched, I've only returned twice to see if they stopped doing crack.

Yeah, I stopped using. :(

I did however provide a feedback, knowing very well it's probably going to fall on deaf ears.

I provided feedback for all of their changes. Until now, the latest Google Maps changes were the worst (some months back now, forget when). I've mostly quit using it too. Although I have to say, MapQuest has to be the most annoying maps interface.

I don't mind the Google Maps that much, yes, it can get confusing when you're in a hurry but for all non-critical "...hey where's that store at?" stuff, it's okay.

With the previous interface, you could dismiss interface cruft. I get making the map take most of the window, that's great. But I'd prefer to not have the UI boxes cluttering the map. Defeats the benefit IMO. If they'd fix that, it'd be great. If I dismiss the "results" box, don't keep popping it back open when I move the map (or allow me to choose). And the search UI box should also allow minimization. Really, with minimized icons, they'd be better suited in a UI ribbon than over the map.

If you understand that Google Maps is just a platform for Google to sell you products, then you'll probably use it sparing. The trouble is, more often than not, we forget that it's a advertising platform and expect it to be a reliable source of information and we fail.

That's exactly why I try to reduce my reliance on their adware. On the plus side, they've made it easier.

I first quit using their search as a default. I'll still go to it if I'm not seeing "good" results.
I then quit using Maps as a default. Only when I have trouble elsewhere or if I want to cross-check satellite imagery will I go to Google.
And now I've quit using News. Unfortunately, I've not found a good alternative.

I never liked Chrome, so only use it if required. I do separate browsing functions, so it sometimes gets pulled into service.

I've also started using Chromium as an option. Firefox has been getting worse and worse, so I'm waiting for when I drop it completely (except for tests or a limited use separate browsing function).

Mail is the only thing I continue to use. That's the most difficult to quit. I've thought about going with a "secure" service, but who to pick, and will they be there tomorrow, etc.

The demise of Google News is really sad, it used to be a (somewhat) direct source of information and news. Not anymore.

Google Maps, cannot be relied upon. Although I like it very much but every time I relied on it for something, it has failed me. Funnily, their website is somewhat easier to navigate.
