Using "emerge" I can only get Eclipse 3.5 which cannot support Android development, or at least it doesn't match the latest Google SDK. So now I just download a eclipse binery file and use. But I don't know how to list it in the "Application Menu".

Who can teach me? Thanks!

Seriously, forget about portage version of eclipse and building it from source at all. Just install JDK and grab a binary from website unpack and get job done.
There is an overlay where more recent version are kept (seden overlay) but Indigo is a latest version there.

I think it depends on what you are using as desktop. With Gnome 3+, you may use the application alacarte (x11-misc/alacarte) to create the menu entries.

And I am really curious about why portage doesn't update the latest version of eclipse.
And even for the eclipse 3.5, I really don't know where portage put it.

Alacarte will do the job for XFCE too.

Some time ago I've read somewhere that building Eclipse in "Gentoo Way" (that is to use system libs and other stuff managed by portage) is very hard, plus building java apps from source give practically no optimization options.

The obvious question then is why Gentoo does not provide a binary eclipse-sdk-bin package. I think it did in the past. If only to save us from the pain of going to eclipse.org to check for updates and doing the installation manually (simple as it may be).

There is dev-util/eclipse-sdk-bin-4.2.0 in java-overlay overlay.

I'm using this one and it works great. Installation is a snap and it just works.

It's also the latest and greatest.

Thanks for this information. Truth be said, i've managed to get away with nearly 8 years of using Gentoo without ever installing overlays. This is my main work computer and i'd rather be safe :)

In fact, this is the second time in so many days that i get recommendations to use an overlay in order to solve a problem. Is this just an accident or a manifestation of Gentoo manpower problems?

i have installed tha java-overlay and am trying to emerge eclipse-sdk

but all i get is the masked ebuild

according to the manual i should be able to run emerge eclipse-sdk after installing java-overlay

am i missing something?

eclipse-sdk-3.5.1-r1 is also masked for some reason, even with java-overlay installed

Once you have installed the java-overlay, you will still need to add
Code:
=dev-util/eclipse-sdk-bin-4.2.0
to /etc/portage/package.keywords

Once you have done that, you can
Code:
emerge -av eclipse-sdk-bin
