Hi, ALL,
In here it says that I need to edit /mnt/gentoo/etc/portage/make.conf.

Shouldn't it be /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf instead?
Besides there is no such file on my HDD...

Thank you.

There's currently a progress to move everything related to portage, thus including make.{conf, profile} into /etc/portage. The latest stages on the mirrors should already reflect that.

AFAIK, there's no deadline as to when support for /etc/make.conf will be removed, but it's encouraged to use /etc/portage/make.conf. Since not all tools currently support this, f.e. porthole doesn't, it's advised to move the file to /etc/portage and symlink it to the old position.

Correct. Although you can move it yourself into /etc/portage/. The documentation was changed before the new stages were ready. Starting from next week new stages (if the release team can fix the building process) will use the new location.

As avx already suggested, portage will continue to support the old /etc/make.conf location, so there is no need to move to the new location. It is not advised to make a symlink though, because portage will source both if present. Just choose either the old or the new location.

So let's say I finish this install and in a month will sync.
Will I see the /etc/portage/make.conf file?

Thank you.

No, sync will pull in neither /etc/make.conf, nor /etc/portage/make.conf. They are purely from catalyst, the stage3/livecd builder.

You dont need to change anything, just create your "make.conf" in "/etc/portage".

And leave the old one in place? Or move the old one there?

It was suggested not to make a symlink, so....

Thank you.

/etc/make.conf will work fine
/etc/portage/make.conf will work fine

but you would be advised to choose one, and stick with it - not both

so either:
-keep using /etc/make.conf
or
-move /etc/make.conf to /etc/portage/make.conf

they both accomplish the same thing, both work, etc
