Try again and see if it segfaults in exactly same place again.

Try
Code:
# cd /var/tmp/portage/media-video/vlc-2.0.3/work/vlc-2.0.3/bin
# gdb --args ./vlc-cache-gen ../modules
(gdb) run
[quite some output]
[-> segfault]
(gdb) bt full

and post the output.

You will need to install gdb, if it is not yet installed.

I am running into an identical issue with vlc-2.0.1, even with MAKEOPTS="-j1"

I tried franzf's gdb trick and this is what I get:

Quote:
# gdb --args ./vlc-cache-gen ../modules

oh. my problem's gone away.

Superfox_il_Volpone, try a revdep-rebuild.

I happened to be in the middle of a rev-dep rebuild where webkit-gtk was failing (cough), so I worked around it by manually emerging everything except webkit-gtk. vlc was one of the packages to be rebuilt. when vlc also failed I skipped that too. after the rest of the packages were rebuilt I tried vlc again and it worked.

so, short story, revdep-rebuild may address this.

thanks guys, solved re-emerging gnome and vlc from scratch. I was downgrading my system from unstable to stable, probably I broke some dependencies in this process.
