dgiorgio,

Please post a complete build log on a pastebin site.
IF the error message mentions a path file to post, include that too.

dgiorgio,

Code:
patching file make.conf
Hunk #1 succeeded at 22 (offset -1 lines).
Hunk #2 succeeded at 44 with fuzz 2 (offset 6 lines).
Hunk #3 succeeded at 106 (offset 15 lines).
patch: setting attributes for ./make.conf.ojYILqg: Operation not supported

Shows that patch itself worked - three hunks of a patch file were applied.

Things went wrong when file attributes were attempted to be set. Have you attempted to use extended at
tributes on a filestsem that does not support them or ACLs without ACL support installed?

I don't see any hardened features in use from your emerge --info so its unlileky to be that. Your sys-apps/sandbox: 2.6 is current too.

Try
Code:
FEATURES=-sandbox emerge portage
to test if its a sandbox issue.
WARNING: sandbox is a safety feature so this is not a fix, even if it works, only a test.

dgiorgio,

I understand that anything tht needs patch is broken - its not patch itself, its something else.

It is not helpful to work with other packages. Did my test wor or not ?
If it failed was the log any different - post it if you don't know.

You say things went wrong over the last few days. Can your post all of /var/log/emerge.log ?
You may have problems fitting that onto a pastebin as its is likely to be large. Mine is 14Mb.

The output of
Code:
grep Compiling /var/log/emerge.log
may be good enough as it says what was attempted to be emerged when.

dgiorgio,

The last timestamp there is 1345688644 which is Thu, 23 Aug 2012 02:24:04 GMT.
Code:
grep Compiling /var/log/emerge.log | tail -n 100
will get you the last 100 lines.

Put the first timestamp into a timestamp converter to make sure the data is old enough to include the emerge that made things go wrong.
If its too new change the -n 100 to say, -n 200 The -n is the number of lines to take from the end of the output.

dgiorgio,

The last time you wer able to build two packages was
Code:
1347658355:  === (1 of 2) Compiling/Merging (app-admin/eselect-1.3.1::/usr/portage/app-admin/eselect/eselect-1.3.1.ebuild)
1347658367:  === (2 of 2) Compiling/Merging (sys-apps/portage-2.1.11.17::/usr/portage/sys-apps/portage/portage-2.1.11.17.ebuild)

There is nothing harmful there.

What does
Code:
df -i
and
Code:
df
show ?
Maybe you have a full filesystem?

dgiorgio,

Everything looks OK so far.

Please boot a liveCD, mount your filesystems and get into the chroot.
Does emerge portage work there?

If so, its a kernel or services problem. I am grasping at straws now as I'm out of ideas.
This is just trying to narrow the problem space.

worked, I'm updating with livecd.

I will recompile the kernel.

gentoo will work again? or I have to always use the livecd to update.

I came back to take the test without the livecd, and the error continues.

I suspect that the LiveCD kernel has support for xattrs on the relevant filesystems, but that the OP's personal kernel lacks such support. OP: what is the output of zgrep EXT4 /proc/config.gz, as run from the non-working kernel?
