I have been attempting to install LibreOffice since last week. When I try to run this command:
Code:

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

to start the installation process as per the LibreOffice readme file's instructions, I receive this error message:
Code:

dpkg: error: failed to open package info file `/var/lib/lib/dpkg/status' for reading: No such file or directory

Could this be an issue with the LibreOffice software, or is dpkg itself having a problem? Either way, how can it be fixed?

Whats wrong with
Code:
emerge libreoffice
or if you don't wnat to build it yourself.
Code:
 emerge libreoffice-bin

Why are you faffing about with a *.deb file unless you are using Debian or a Debian derivative?

I did originally try to emerge libreoffice, but when I did, I got this: http://bpaste.net/show/45068/
So, I thought that since just plain emerging it didn't work, maybe the readme file would have an alternate way to install it. I think I actually have gotten *.deb files to work on this machine before (even though I'm not running any Debian-type distros, just Gentoo), if I recall correctly, so I assumed that the readme's install method would work.

ashlyw42,

I suspect you have something wierd in your mirrors list or USE flags.
It works for me and I don't get hat Georgia Tech nastygram.

Please post your
Code:
 emerge --info
that inclides your make.conf that Daggy requested. It also provides your profile too.
It does omit any /etc/portaage/package.{use|mask|unmask|keywords} etc setting you might have, so its not everything we might like to know.

NeddySeagoon: here's the emerge --info: http://bpaste.net/show/45132/
The only one of the /etc/portage/package.{use|mask|unmask|keywords} files that I could find was /etc/portage/package.use, which is this:
Code:

x11-base/xorg-server udev
x11-base/xorg-server udev
net-wireless/wpa_supplicant qt4
net-wireless/wpa_supplicant qt4
x11-base/xorg-server udev
x11-base/xorg-server udev
x11-base/xorg-server udev
x11-base/xorg-server udev
gnome-base/gnome-session branding
gnome-base/gnome-session branding
x11-wm/fluxbox gnome kde truetype vim-syntax

(I haven't a clue where all the duplicates came from, or what they have to do with anything.)

...Any ideas?

ashlyw42,

These lines are the source of your libreoffice problem.
Code:
Timestamp of tree: Sun, 22 Jul 2012 20:00:01 +0000GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo rsync://rsync.gtlib.gatech.edu/gentoo"

Your gentoo tree is about 8 weeks old, wich is a bad sign, and either your gtlib mirrror is incomplete, or the libreoffice-core-3.5.4.2.tar.xz file, which failed to download, has been removed from the mirrors because its not needed by the current portage tree.

Your first step is to
Code:
emerge --sync
to update your portage tree, then try
Code:
emerge libreoffice
again. Its perfectly possible for mirrors to be broken or incomplete.
Use mirrorselect to audition mirrors for you. Chose about 10 to include in make.conf.

If libreoffice fails, you should get a new message.

Your system is well overdue an update. Gentoo updates the master mirror every 30 minutes. That is, there is a new definition of the gentoo packages every 30 minutes. Updating your system once a week make life easy. Once a month is adequate. After six months getting up to date can be a challenge.

Since we have your emerge --info, heres a few more hints.
Your java dev-java/oracle-jdk-bin-1.7.0.5-r1, or old buggy and full of security holes - update unless you are pegged to this version by a particular application.
You can do better than CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -pipe -O2" unless you need to share binary packages with other systems. -march=native allows gcc to choose whats best for your CPU.
Do not use -march=native if you use distributed compiling.
Your USE flage are missing the multimedia USE settings to suit your CPU. These flags enable hand optimised code to take advantage of your particular CPU. These code segments are normally only found in multimedia applications. Again, if you need general purpose run anywhere code, do not set these USE flags.

I did the emerge --sync, which was a good thing because apparently I needed an entirely new version of Portage, but I still haven't been able to successfully emerge libreoffice. This time, I got this error instead of the mirror thing: http://bpaste.net/show/45195/

please post the output of
Code:
emerge -ptv libreoffice

Code:
 emerge libreoffice -vba

ashlyw42,

Close ...

Code:
USE=-vba emerge libreoffice
USE is a cumulative environment varable. BUT portage will not remember this setting and will drop it at the next emerge.

Read man portage to see how to set per package USE flags.
Hint: /etc/portage/package.use

Still no luck... :( I'm not going to re-emerge and wgetpaste this time because it seems like each time I try to recompile libreoffice, it eats up more of my CPU, takes longer, slows everything else down more, kills other programs, and overheats the machine. (This is the sort of thing I was hoping to avoid when I switched to Gentoo, as it happened all the time when I was using Windows, but I guess a new OS can only do so much when you're dealing with a ~7-year-old laptop.) This is what happened this time, starting from when the output departed from normal (sorry for the huge post):
Code:

{standard input}: Assembler messages:
{standard input}:31276: Warning: end of file not at end of a line; newline inserted
{standard input}:32899: Error: no such instruction: `mo'

ashlyw42,

Your latest post could be signs over overheating or problem hardware.

There are two or three things to try.

1. Prop the laptop up at the edges with some thick books. This allows the air to circulate underneth and helps with cooling.
2. Run mentest86 from a liveCD. Errord so not always mean faulty RAM. Run a few cycles and if it finds problems post the results.
3. In make.conf set MAKEOPTS="-j1" This onlys allows make to run a singe thread at a time. Builds take longer but need less RAM.
4. After 7 years, your cooling system could do with a clean and possibly you need to replace the thermal paste ... but that all means taking the laptop apart. Google may know how to do it.

There are other approaches if you have another Linux system

No, the system simply ran out of memory:
Code:
{standard input}: Assembler messages:
{standard input}:31276: Warning: end of file not at end of a line; newline inserted
{standard input}:32899: Error: no such instruction: `mo'
{standard input}: Error: open CFI at the end of file; missing .cfi_endproc directive

that means that the partially coimpiled file was not piped to the assembler in its entirety, which may very well be due to it not fitting in memory. With LO being a huge program this is a likely explanation.

Try adding more swap and resuming the emerge.

I follow your logic but why wasn't the OOM killer invoked by the kernel.

NeddySeagoon: The laptop was propped on its side during the emerge, as I noticed that it was overheating and was already aware that the fan probably isn't working very well at this point.
I tried doing the emerge with "-j1" in MAKEOPTS after that, but I couldn't do anything else on the computer while the emerge was going and it eventually just gave me the black screen of death (screen backlight was on, but nothing was showing up and no amount of key pressing or mouse wiggling made it work) so I had to cold boot, and immediately changed MAKEOPTS back to "-j3" like it was.
I'd rather not take my computer apart even if I do manage to find something online showing me how...I rely on this laptop for work, and I've noticed that my relationship with computers seems to be a rather stunning example of Murphy's Law at this point--whatever can go wrong, will go wrong. :-/
And I don't have access to another Linux system.
(Sorry for my late reply...the day I posted my last message on this thread, my computer's power cord stopped working, and I only just recently received my new one. Also, I received an email notification today saying there was a new post on this forum, which there was, but when I clicked the link it took me to a spam thread in the dustbin forum in some sort of Eastern European language. I don't know if you can do anything about that or if it was just a random error or someone is spoofing a Linux admin email address, but I just thought it might be something to look into.)
