PostPosted: Sat Sep 08, 2012 6:14 pm    Post subject: 1st gentoo minimal install, new computer, blank screen Reply with quote

Hey guys, I am a complete noob, know little to nothing about linux much less gentoo (have always been a windows user by default), so please bear with me.

I will go step by step from what I did first to where I am now.
So far, I have burned gentoo minimal to a DVD-RW and placed it in my new laptop, the lenovo ideapad z585. Note: the only thing I have done to the laptop that is not stock is replace the hard drive with an SSD, so Gentoo will be the first operating system installed to it.
When I turn the computer on with the dvd inside, it goes through the motions until which the first screen of the gentoo install pops up (I know from having partially installed gentoo in a virtual machine before).
It says "boot:" to which I type in "gentoo", it loads "gentoo" and "gentoo.igz" and then nothing. Blank screen in which I am unable to do anything. I cant even turn the computer off without long pressing the power button.

For the record, I did look into this problem before posting the topic, and I believe I have the same problem as this guy https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-909552-start-0.html , though unfortunately I wasnt able to understand all the jargon that was being thrown around (ive never chrooted before) and he is using a desktop with two video cards, whereas I am using a laptop with only one video card.

I think it may also be useful to mention I have linux mint dual booted on the laptop I am using to write this message, in which I may be able to configure the dvd files.

You can start by using gentoo-nofb instead of gentoo.
Also have you downloaded the correct architecture (amd64)?

You can also use the Linux Mint livedvd to install Gentoo, just start from step 4 in handbook.

And it stops there?

Then try booting with
Code:

gentoo-nofb acpi=off

DONAHUE, it may take a while, but I will give your suggestion a shot.

DONAHUE, I booted gentoo minimal on my Dell Inspiron 1440 and it worked perfectly. Im guessing its so because its an older machine and there is more support for the parts.
As for booting other cds/dvds on my new laptops, which do you suggest? Just any operating system or something similar to gentoo (dare i compare gentoo to arch linux)?

I think the question is if Linux Mint boots on the laptop that has problems with booting the Gentoo install CD. This will give us a bit more information.

As for now, you may try addind 'noapic nolapic' to the parameters.

Also in such cases usually there is no need to quote all the content :) Last few lines will suffice. You can scroll up and down with Shift+PgUp and Shift+PgDn.

virtually any livecd of the same bitness as your intended install that boots on the new laptop can be used to install gentoo; nothing from the install medium becomes part of the installed gentoo system. suggest try system rescue cd
agree that your problem is most likely lack of some driver on the minimal install cd.

Output for "gentoo-nofb acpi=off noapic nolapic" is pretty much the same thing as last time (unless I am missing something) sans the last two lines:

pci 0000:00:10.0: can't find IRQ for PCI INT A; probably buggy MP table
pci 0000:00:12.0: PCI->APIC IRQ transform: INT A -> IRQ 16

Let me burn mint to the disk and see how it goes.

EDIT: The shift+pg up/pg dn didn't work for some reason :(
Also, is there another way of shutting the computer down (besides long pressing the power button until it shuts off)? I was told by a friend a while back that doing so was bad for the computer.
EDIT #2: Downloading systemrescuecd instead.

You can as well try sysrescuecd as DONHAUE has suggested.

I'd use a USB stick instead.

Linux Mint worked well on the new computer. (Thanks for the advice. Its on the usb stick right now.)

Whats next? Should I get the internet working first or jump straight to installing gentoo?

corellon,

I used the mint cd to install gentoo on my computers - it seems to be able to boot just about anything :)

I believe you can now start from chapter 4 to install gentoo

internet first
and make yourself root in mint and then mkdir /mnt/gentoo
BTW you may have incompatiblity between the burner in one laptop and reader in the other, not uncommon these days

Okay, finally got around to setting up the wired internet connection. (Ive been using a trusty friends wireless internet so far, though I'd like to start using the faster wired connection by default.)
The internet provided by our apartment complex comes with a CD It worked fine on my old computer without the CD, though it may be a problem on my lenovo.
First are the messages that first popped up on log in of the mint livecd. Proprietary drivers were not in use, and I believe they cannot be activated without an internet connection. I popped in the ethernet cable but it doesnt seem to want to connect.

from lspci:

the ethernet controller is realtek smiconductor co., ltd. rtl8101e/rtl8102e pci express fast ethernet controller (rev 5)
and the network controller is broadcom corp. bcm4313 802.11b/g/n wireless lan controller (rev 01)

sorry, dont see anything about atheros

also, when the livecd first came on it notified me that the following packages needed to be installed: additional drivers: broadcom sta wireless driver

EDIT: Still haven't been able to get the internet working in the mint live environment. What should I do?

happen to have any usb network interface cards around? appears both NIC's require download of proprietary software/firmware which is inconvenient/impossible for livecd based systems. most livecd automated installer distros ban proprietary. actually thought mint was more flexible about that.
see if either
Code:
modprobe brcmfmac
or
Code:
modprobe -r r8169
modprobe r8101
do any good. If those fail and no usb NIC is handy:
options: install mint, boot mint, download nic software and firmware to usb, and install in mint, get network going, install gentoo from installed mint.
put minimal cd or sysresccd on usb, download a portage snapshot and stage3 to the usb, install using sneakernet

Installing mint. Will I be able to delete it after I have installed gentoo?
The part that gets me, DONAHUE, is the part where I download the nic software and firmware to usb. I feel like I could have done that on my dell inspiron and then installed it on the computer I am working on, the lenovo. Could you post the steps on how to download these packages (for easy placement into the usb) and then how to install these packages on the lenovo?

Also, I was finally able to get my usb to work inside the mint livecd. Here is the log file created after trying to activate the proprietary broadcom sta wireless driver
and the lspci:

You don't install Mint. You use the live CD to provide the tools to install Gentoo. You use it just like the install CD except that mint gives you the advantage of using Xog tools, such as multiple virtual terminals and pasting commands directly from firefox that is contently displaying the handbook.

Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box.

Thanks for this. I really didn't want to have to install mint. A good thing may have come of attempting it though. A message popped up titled "GRUB installation failed" with message "The 'grub-efi' package failed to install into /target/. Without the GRUB boot loader, the installed system will not boot."
Could this information be any useful? I don't know.

Anyway, this is what I would like to know right now, so I can carry on with the gentoo install:
How do I get rid of the mint files that have just been written on my drive? I am still in the livecd by the way.
How does one install gentoo inside the livecd? So far, I have burned it to a DVD-RW disk and it is currently in the optical drive. Isn't doing me much good though as none of the files inside seem to be executable.
