I have noticed that Polkit is a usability problem.
It uses a programing language (Java) for configs, is difficult to configure without any Gentoo documentation, and completely lacks a way to test rules.
It turns Gentoo into XP and adds allot more overhead than the older hal based systems.
In addition it prevents udisks-glue from functioning properly.
For example if udisks-glue is started as root from local and a user plugs in a usb device it wont be mounted in the plugdev group.
Polkit is generally not necessary for a single user system like a laptop and was designed for enterprise sysadmins.
Is there some sort of workaround for simple single user systems on older hardware?
I suppose I could check equery:
Code: | * These packages depend on polkit:
gnome-base/gconf-2.32.4 (policykit ? sys-auth/polkit)
gnome-extra/polkit-gnome-0.101-r1 (>=sys-auth/polkit-0.101[introspection])
net-print/hplip-3.11.10 (policykit ? sys-auth/polkit)
sys-auth/consolekit-0.4.5-r1 (>=sys-auth/polkit-0.101-r1)
sys-auth/polkit-qt-0.99.0 (>=sys-auth/polkit-0.99)
sys-fs/udisks-1.0.4-r1 (>=sys-auth/polkit-0.97)
sys-power/upower-0.9.13-r1 (>=sys-auth/polkit-0.101-r1)

Thoughts ?
Edit well leave it to the minimalists over at puppy:
i just compiled this:

Discussion here:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=78881
Edit well looking at the source it would need some work to run on gentoo.
I can compile it OK but it has a few puppy specific things to it.
I suppose I need to ditch udisks too:

Well i decided to submit a bug to see if anyone is interested in migrating away from this *kit stuff: _________________ Donate to Gentoo |

Stay with polkit 0.105 (thus no javascript), and keep an eye on what major distros such as Debian and Ubuntu do? |

I am not able to make current Polkit work with 104 or 105 work with sys-fs/udisks-glue.
And polkit provides no way to "debug" the custom rules needed to automaticly mount usb drives in the plugdev group.
I am thinking there should be another path for laptops with one user.
EDIT just thinking out of the box has anyone run devd on linux?
EDIT 2 Andriod does not have room for all the kitchensinkit stuff they have no udev even.
