Hi all.

My machine has an Intel HDA sound chip (ALC887-VD) of which I am using exclusively the SPDIF output.

Today after my machine booted I noticed I had no sound going through the SPDIF output although it did yesterday. All I did yesterday was boot Windows and check for surround sound in Windows. It didn't work so I installed updated drivers from Realtek and check surround sound. Failed too. Nevermind, usual Windows voodoo/magic crap... *sighs*

So today when I noticed there was (again) no sound in Linux (it already happened before) I tried to update my .asoundrc file to the following:
~/.asoundrc:
pcm.!default spdif

Before that it contained
~/.asoundrc:
pcm.!default { type hw card PCH }
ctl.!default { type hw card PCH }

and it worked for a couple of days.

This is the only "potentially risky" action I could reasonably correlate with the issue. Do you think it makes sense?

The BIOS can remember its state across reboots. Only way to be sure is to disconnect its power (and remove a laptop's battery while off - example).

Thanks Paul. I however fail to clearly understand how the example you pointed at illustrates this issue but I'll power off the machine again.

Strangely enough I also got a boot message «Machine Check Error» again instead of extlinux boot menu immediately after I installed the drivers in Windows and rebooted... Both these issues might relate to each other as well, I guess, right?

Yeah, my example wasn't clear. To clarify, it was necessary to physically remove the battery from the laptop, for it to reset enough to boot again - just removing the power cable was not enough.

Sounds like you should check for an updated BIOS for your PC, also.

Ah... «Ship first, fix later» or when the worst habits contaminate the whole world of computer technologies... :roll: We've entered an era it's a normal thing to pay for acquiring defective products.

(EDIT: I bought this machine in April or so...)

Or just because of the QA tests are now flaws by design :

What if you build a computer that will only run on windows and test under windows ? You may endup with a product that is not 100% standard with flaws, but still works 100% in that OS unaffect by the flaws.
