I've tried re-emerging libxcb and x11-libs/xcb-util same issue. thanks for help in advance :D
dunno if this matters but my firefox has stopped working as well, I get this error:

Code:

PCOMGlueLoad error for file /usr/lib64/firefox/libxpcom.so:
libxcb-util.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Couldn't load XPCOM.

same issue right?

Can you build an earlier version of xcb / xcb-util?

ok.. so, don't mean to be this much of a noob but how do you do that? i've tried adding:

Code:

<=x11-libs/xcb-util-0.3.6

to just about every /etc/portage/package.* I could think of.. it's still pulling 0.3.9... sorry :?

No worries.
Just enter the following:
Code:
emerge =x11-libs/xcb-util-0.3.8

and
Code:
emerge =x11-misc/xcb-2.4

I'm not sure but you may have to do the same for libxcb.

thanks a lot! that fixed the problem alright... now, was I right in thinking that adding:

Code:

<=x11-libs/xcb-util-0.3.8

to one of the package.* files would prevent an update in the future? I'll need to prevent them from updating.

Code:
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.5.3/../../../../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld: warning: libxcb-util.so.0, needed by /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/4.5.3/../../../../lib64/libstartup-notific
The correct approach would have been to re-emerge x11-libs/startup-notification.
