Well, being the idiot that I am, i was logged in as root lastnight and rather saucy, and did a 'emerge dep-clean', as to why i did it i have no clue. anyhow, now it gives me error messages similiar to this (i say similar cause my install is now broken, so i cant check verbatim) :

if i attempt to 'ls' the system gives me some nonsense about the /bin/sh/WHOAMI file being gone or something, so i cannot issue any commands what so ever. any help in resolving this issue would be appreciated.

any commands i issue, it gives me the 'bin/sh/WHOAMI file missing' error message..

Thanks ,

Chris

You are found guilty of Computing Under the Influence and hereby sentenced to three days of compiling your Gentoo from scratch.

Sorry, I couldn't resist :) But seriously, maybe you can restore some critical stuff from a stage2 or stage3 image. It's worth a shot.

Can you log in at all? It sounds like there may be some issues with your user configuration files /etc/passwd and /etc/groups. But I don't know what to make of that since that file does not exist on my system (/bin/sh -> /bin/bash is the bash executable).

well,i can login and i get this error message when i log in as root:

login(pam_unix)[664]: session opened for user root by (uid=0)
-bash: /usr/bin/whoami : No such filr or directory.
-bash: [: =: unary operator expected

plus a ton of output error messages from dmesg...
ie: /sbin/rc: line 1: ls: command not found

so i assume somethingis fubarred with bash..any ideas?

No its not bash just some core utilities got fubared. In particular at least

escott@localhost 11:17 AM Sun Dec 07 [H=502 C=2]
~:> qpkg -f /bin/whoami
sys-apps/coreutils *

escott@localhost 11:17 AM Sun Dec 07 [H=503 C=3]
~:> qpkg -f /sbin/rc
sys-apps/baselayout *

will need to be rebuilt. I don't know if enough of your system exists for portage to be able to do this. If not you might need to boot into your install disk :-/.

If it want's to download something then you must not have the tarball on the system, so somehow you have to get that tarball on the box.

emerge depclean is simply drain bramaged. On my system the first thing it wants to delete is grub. Okayyyyy.

Code:

cs root # emerge -p depclean

*** WARNING *** : DEPCLEAN CAN  SERIOUSLY  IMPAIR YOUR SYSTEM. USE CAUTION.

Calculating depclean dependencies ... done!

>>> These are the packages that I would unmerge:

 sys-apps/grub

     omitted: none

 net-libs/linc

Were you able to fix it without doing a total reinstall?

Another reason why to use long and complicated passwords to protect your system: You can't write them correctly and login if you're too drunk ;)
