was trying to play enemy-territory and posted my problems in another thread.Noone seems to have answers to that so I guessed I would try to update again.
Code:
emerge -e system

got up sandbox failure.
I think this is the relevant part from the middle:

Code:

I tried emerge --resume-skipfirst as that has helped me in the past when I was stuck
Code:

emerge --resume-skipfirst
Usage: emerge [options]

emerge: error: no such option: --resume-skipfirst
I tried
[code]FEATURES=-sandbox emerge sandbox[/code]
with the same results.

I also did :
Code:

vomit earthy # emerge -uavDN world
--- Invalid atom in /etc/portage/package.use: =media-video/ffmpeg
--- Invalid atom in /etc/portage/package.use: =virtual/ffmpeg

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Last time,I manually removed every single of these packages, there must be a better way.

I'm going to yell at you a little bit, so brace yourself. :P
  • Never run
    Code:
    emerge -e
on an out of date system. Update first.
  • If the failure says to attach a file, as in
    Code:
!!! Please attach the following file when seeking support:
    !!! /var/tmp/portage/sys-apps/sandbox-2.5/work/build-x86/config.log
then it might be advisable to attach the file. There are other "post the output of..." recommendations there as well. wgetpaste is your friend.
  • You remembered the option wrong. It's not "--resume-skipfirst"; it's "--resume --skipfirst". Man page would've told you that.
  • Little 'b' blocks are those that Portage knows how to solve itself. They aren't any big deal: merely informative in nature. The emerge will not fail because of them.
  • You've got license updates to deal with. Read up on that and fix those issues.
  • You've got syntax errors in some of your /etc/portage/package.* files. Read up on that and fix those, too, while you're at it.
The long and short of it is, please clean up what you can clean up and give us what we need to help you.

Now, that said, Gentoo does tend to punish you if you go too long between updates. I think that's more of a "nature of the beast" issue and a "problem to fix", but it's definitely true. You might want to update a little more often.

--emptytree (short form -e) isn't for updating at all. It's for recompiling everything. The only time it's necessary is if you got a shiny new compiler version and/or have discovered new CFLAGS to try out and believe that you'll benefit from recompiling all of your packages with the new compiler and/or CFLAGS. To just update those things that are out of date, use --update (short for -u). There are several additional nuances to updating that have their own command line options. Here are some of them:
  • --deep (short for -D) forces a (usually unnecessary deep dependency analysis.
  • --newuse (short for -N) will recompile any package for which the USE flags have changes since it was last compiled.
  • --with-bdeps=y (no short form) will update out of date packages that are on your system only because they're needed to build a package that you explicitly wanted.
There are other nuances. The emerge and portage man pages are your friends.

A good old standard rule of thumb update command is
Code:
emerge --update --deep --newuse --verbose --ask world
short form
Code:
emerge -uDNva world
Also note that "system" isn't your whole system, "world" is. That's what you should be using for routine updates. You might want to re-read A Portage Introduction from the Handbook.

Do this one, too, please:

This is the 2nd day of my update.Thats why I tend to update seldom.I simply don't have time to update more often as I have 3 other boxes and as strangely as that sounds I installed Gentoo to use it ,not to update and fix it.I have a policy of updating the other boxes, and checking wether they have some problems, before I update this main box.1 of them has AMD64 and all updates went without problems.

Code:

 emerge --info | wgetpaste
--- Invalid atom in /etc/portage/package.use: =media-video/ffmpeg
--- Invalid atom in /etc/portage/package.use: =virtual/ffmpeg
Your paste can be seen here: http://bpaste.net/show/35449/

Code:
wgetpaste /var/tmp/portage/app-emulation/wine-1.4/work/wine32/config.log --verbose
Apparently nothing was received. Perhaps the connection failed.

This pastebin is truncated. Can you look at the pastebin, look at the actual build log on your system, and see if they match? If the do, then rebuild sandbox, like so
Code:
emerge -1v sandbox
and, if it fails, paste the build log. In any case, report back.

They matched so I am doing as suggested
Code:
 emerge -1v sandbox | wgetpaste

Hey earthy

You will lose the complaint about invalid atom
Code:
--- Invalid atom in /etc/portage/package.use: =media-video/ffmpeg
--- Invalid atom in /etc/portage/package.use: =virtual/ffmpeg

if you add the specific package version to the package.
eg:
Code:
=media-video/ffmpeg-0.10.3 sdl

Or drop the "=" completely.
So if you want the SDL (like above eg) USE flag on ffmpeg (for example), you would put the following:
Code:
media-video/ffmpeg sdl

In the short term I fixed my "sandbox" problem by disabling it for the troubled package.
Code:
USE="-sandbox" emerge blah blah blah etc

Then I resumed the emerge.

There is no such emerge flag as --resume-skip-first.
Try --resume or --keep-going

The important lines from the build log are:
build log:
checking for suffix of object files... configure: error: in `/var/tmp/portage/sys-apps/sandbox-2.5/work/build-x86':
configure: error: cannot run C compiled programs.
First try,
Code:
USE="-sandbox" emerge -1v sandbox
and report back. Oh, yeah. Could you also report the output of
Code:
gcc-config -l
please?

Already did.

Already tried USE="-sandbox" emerge blah blah blah etc
And I have FEATURES="-sandbox -ccache -distcc -parse-eapi-ebuild-head" in make.conf.
anyway:
Code:
 emerge --update system
Calculating dependencies... done!
>>> Auto-cleaning packages...

>>> No outdated packages were found on your system.

Threw out wine as I don use it ATM.and doing
Code:
emerge -uavDN world

That should include an update to sandbox-2.6. We'll see if the problem persists with that new version.
