|
|
Hello
I had installed xvidcap, but I had some troubles with update, so I unmerged it.
Now I want to emerge xvidcap back, but it is not in potrage any more...
Now, I do not recall how I installed it, but as a newbie,
I stick to portage - if it is not in portage I do not install it.
What's up with this?
With what am I going to record my desktop?
Thank you _________________ Kind regards, Goran Mitic

Please use the forum search next time, but basically xvidcap was removed from portage:
Referenced from this thread
Quote: |
!!! The following installed packages are masked:
- x11-misc/xvidcap-1.1.7 (masked by: package.mask)
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Markos Chandras <hwoarang@gentoo.org> (20 Jun 2010)
# Bundles ffmpeg copy, doens't work with systems' ffmpeg
# Bug #258042. Replacement is media-video/recordmydesktop
# Pending removal in 2010-07-20
|
As suggested above, media-video/recordmydesktop is the recommended replacement for it, and it works quite well in my (limited) experience. |

Yes, you are absolutely right, I should search first...
... and I did...
I had criteria, it had to be posted in last year,
since next month will be my first year on Gentoo
(soon 3 years on gnu/linux)
and the only app that I installed beside portage was Netbeans
(and I deleted that one also, since it emerged in portge, 6.8 version).
I do presume, that I emerged xvidcap in past year,
and line in /etc/portage/package.keywords state:
x11-misc/xvidcap ~amd64
so I am quite sure I emerged xvidcap via portage...
Post you linked was on the first page of search (search word: xvidcap)
but it is over 5 years old... And on same page I found my posts as well
But that is, I guess, poor excuse on my side, I should read even more.
On comparison of two, the xvidcap and recordmydesktop,
I have some experience;
xvidcap worked 98% (it did crashed if I recorded firexox),
and well, recordmydesktop also works, but it produces LARGE files,
and the bug is, that is stucks on one frame for 5-10 minutes,
which repeats several time in 15 minutes of recording,
resulting in over an hour long video.
Thank you for your time once again and see you in next thread. _________________ Kind regards, Goran Mitic

Yeah, I usually look at the last post date on such threads, as often times even ancient threads will have some activity going (as in this case).
Anyways, always good to note for future reference
As for your findings with recordmydesktop... I'm afraid I can't help much there. I would definitely recommend doing a quick search through bugs.gentoo.org to see if anyone has had similar issues and managed to solve their problems. Either that, or google search through the Gentoo forums (I'll be honest, phpBB's search function is god aweful... unless it's a simple term like "xvidcap") for... hmm.. something like "recordmydesktop solved" or "recordmydesktop lag". I haven't experienced the same problem myself so I would assume it's either an odd bug or a configuration issue somewhere.
Good luck with it either way! |

I personally miss xvidcap's ability to record just an area on the screen.
I rarely need to record the whole desktop, or a window.
Is recordmydesktop still the only replacement available? |

Oi bornmw,
I am growing comfortable with recordmydesktop...
To capture just a part of a screen you have to set it in command line:
Code: | recordmydesktop -x 100 -y 100 --width 200 --height 200 -o recordPartOfScreen.ogv --no-sound |
This will capture only 200x200 pixel area of a screen starting at 100 px left (from top left corner) and 100 px down
in a file recordPartOfScreen.ogv, without sound (I add sound latter on)
I do not use gui, just command line. _________________ Kind regards, Goran Mitic

Not sure if any other applications actually work, but recordmydesktop doesn't seem to refresh/pick up windows drawn by opengl... :( Or is there a way to do it? _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

Oi eccerr0r,
well I am noob, and frankly I do not know what opengl is,
but as I read back than recordmydesktop is not recording 3d.
(I do not know if the two - 3d and opengl - are connected)
For instance, I can record a lot of stuff, and it works just fine,
but eternal lands is the one of two games I do play,
and I can NOT record that, or rather frames are like every 30 frame is recorded, so poor...
I guess it has something to do with 3d...
Also could not find opengl in man files but I recover this:
Quote: | BUGS
Does not record 3d windows, if --full-shots isn't specified. |
but I did not try that one yet since man pages states it is not recommended.
I guess there is always a choice to install binary xvidcap or other record application,
but I won't do that unless it is really crucial for my work.
Said that, I would not mind having a good application of capturing my desktop in portage, in 1d, 2d, 3d, 4d....
(I am not the one who should criticize, since I amount to gentoo next to nothing) _________________ Kind regards, Goran Mitic

Ahh... yeah that's it. OpenGL is the 3D API for X11. I was expecting issues with this because a different pathway (just like Xvid) is used to draw to the screen. --full-shots did it, very slowly :(
I tried building xvidcap locally and it didn't work (since I didn't go through install). I'll see what happens if I swipe an old ebuild and use that as a skeleton in a local portage tree to see if it will still build.. _________________ Intel Core i7 2700K/Radeon R7 250/24GB DDR3/256GB SSD

It works relatively well with the media-video/qt-recordmydesktop frontend, selecting the desktop area is not as nice as it was with xvidcap, but it works... ;-) |
