well, as i expected, gentoo couldnt auto detect my usb modem, so im wondering...
would it be doable to put a kernel's usb device module on a diskette and simply load it during the install process so i can enable my cable modem?
would be damn nice |

I believe gentoo probably found your usb modem but didn't know how to deal with it.
To see what I meant, leave your modem unplugged when you boot. At the console prompt, plug your modem back in. You should see gentoo acknowledging a new usb device but not able to link it to a driver. See my post: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=9360
I understand that gentoo generally recognize most usb devices at boot time, but may be unable to do anything about it (as above). More often than not, these msgs fly past the screen too fast for us to catch any of them.
If you ever find out how to link a driver to the usb device, do post it on the forum. I'm sure there are others out there facing similar problems.

hub.c : USB new device connect on bus 1/2, assigned number 2
usb.c : USB device 2(vend/prod 0x7b2/0x4100) is not claimed by any active driver
the modem's a motorolla...
so...which would be the "appropriate active driver" then? |
