The upgrade to xorg-server 1.12.2 appeared yesterday, and after emerging it and 106 associated packages, X fails to start, giving me these messages:

Fortunately, I was able to get my system back by masking >xorg-server-1.11.4-r1 and the updated x11-drivers/ packages. But, many other packages (too many to try to mask and rebuild) that were compiled against the newer version don't work. What's going on here?

Quote: | You must rebuild all drivers if upgrading from <xorg-server-$(get_version_component_range 1-2)
because the ABI changed. If you cannot start X because
of module version mismatch errors, this is your problem.
You can generate a list of all installed packages in the x11-drivers
category using this command:
emerge portage-utils; qlist -I -C x11-drivers/
or using sets from portage-2.2:
emerge @x11-module-rebuild |
Did you do this? |

Yes, I did that several times, actually. And I don't think this is a module version mismatch problem. It's a freakin' segfault. |

yeah, I am having the same problem. I upgraded all my modules as well, by using:
emerge `qlist -I -C x11-drivers/`
and still having problems. |

Odd, I've been on 1.12 since 8th March, 1.12.2 for about 3 weeks and it seems to be working just fine.
Any more details about your setups ? |

sl70, niterain, et al ...
I did the upgrade this morning with no issues. I'd taken the opportunity to move from xorg-x11 to the more streamlined xorg-server and so after having un-merged xorg-x11, and run --depclean, I did the emerge xorg-server and then a '--update --deep' to update any packages not pulled in by xorg-server. It was at this point that portage warned me to re-emerge libxcb and xcb-utils, which I did. After the update was complete I run revdep-rebuild which re-merged x11-wm/i3 (my window manager) and perhaps one other package.
So, perhaps you missed the warning re libxcb and xcb-utils ... just a guess, as I said the update was fairly painless here ...
HTH & best ...

Both xcb and xcb-utils were included in the merge of 92 packages. This problem arose simultaneously in my computers at home and in the office with the same xorg-server upgrade. Both computers have ATI video cards and use the open-source drivers. Here is my emerge --info:

Funny, I'm on open radeon too, though my video card is quite old.
More details, please - include package versions for relevant packages. |

Ach! I spoke too soon. It worked (I think) on my office machine, but the problem persists on my computer at home. (Actually, I don't know for sure that it worked on the office computer. I did it remotely, and when I restarted xdm, I did not get the segmentation fault message in the log. I'll have to check for sure when I go in to work tomorrow.)
Still open to suggestions. |

Are both your work machine and desktop 64bit? Also, have you tryed with startx rather than xdm? I ask as it might help if we narrow down the possible causes.

My work machine was no good, either. I had to roll back the packages and rebuild.
@khayyam: yes, I have tried startx, but that gives me the same segfault. |

I imagined as much, it was just a question of trying to rule out possible causes. Also, as you've posted logs showing one of the machines is x86_64 is the other likewise? Again, this might be something that could provide a possible cause, and why I, on ia32, didn't have similar issues.

Instead of downgrading xorg-server, you can try to unmask xf86-video-ati-6.14.5 and libdrm-2.4.35
They are still masked because the nouveau part of mesa does not work with >=libdrm-2.4.34 |

Actually I have the similar problem on my x32 machine with intel video card. I've also emerged all the drivers that was shown to me by the above command and the startup-notification package as well (sugested by redep-rebuild). Anyway since X are working it's painfully slow, I have to wait even a minute for a response sometimes. Even emerge --deep @world doesn't help to me....
I'll send my configuration fails and logs from Xorg-server tomorow from beter working system, because I'm in CLI right now...
Any help would be welcome |

sl70 ...
Just a thought ... as the warning about re-merging libxcb and xcb-util came from x11-proto/xcb-proto (I've since discovered from another thread) these may have been merged prior to xcb-proto and you may still need to re-merge them. If I think of the cronology of my own update it went something like this:
- emerge --update xorg-server (which pulled in x11-proto/xcb-proto, and provided the warning re libxcb and xcb-util)
- emerge --oneshot libxcb xcb-util
- revdep-rebuild (which rebuilt startup-notification and x11-wm/i3)
So, though these packages may have been updated during your --update they may have been merged prior to xcb-proto. Again, just a thought, as I think your perhaps done with messing with it.
Voransky ... your problem may be similar but it could just as well be unrelated ... your best to start your own thread as then this thread remains focused on this specific problem.

ok, I'll make a new thread for my issue, I've just posted here because it was the only one that I've found about some problems with this update... |

OK, good. This suggests that the xcb-proto was built against the old libxcb and that my cronology above is not entirely correct, xcb-proto should come after libxcb ... anyhow, revdep-rebuild should re-merge anything that was built against the previous libxcb.
Its still not certain that this is the cause of sl70's segfault ... but anyhow, its good that your problem is now fixed.
