Hi fellows I could use some help
I can't get this to work:
I have a MacBookPro7,1 (13") with Nvidia GeForce 320M and I get the black screen.
intrd boot ok then looks like after udev kick in screen go black : no pointer but I can blindly use a tty to reboot
the mac boot via efi and grub2.

I can get X to work with nouveau but I need nvidia blob to work(for dual head) and anyway now it's becoming a challenge (why the hell can't I get this to work??!!).

Now using

  • nvidia-drivers-302.17 (did previously test with 3 anterior version of nvidia-drivers)
  • linux-3.4.2-gentoo-r1 (did try with linux-3.4.0-gentoo, linux-3.3.5-gentoo, linux-3.2.12-gentoo )
[on this last kernel I did set nvidiabl (thanks to https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-917890-highlight-backlight.html) thinking this might be a backlight related problem but no change.I also use app-laptop/pommed
note:nouveau driver set for linux-3.4.3-gentoo
lately I can't even get nvidia-driver to show in Xorg.log

for nvidia-drivers:
-kernel .config https://gist.github.com/2987097
-Xorg.log https://gist.github.com/2987128
-message https://gist.github.com/2987115

for nouveau:
-kernel .config https://gist.github.com/2986925
-Xorg.log https://gist.github.com/2986912
-message https://gist.github.com/2987136
-dmesg https://gist.github.com/2986937

some infos about the laptop :
dmidecode:https://gist.github.com/2986791
lspci :https://gist.github.com/2987139
emerge --info: https://gist.github.com/2987080

sample procedure:
Code:
eselect kernel set linux-3.4.2-gentoo-r1
make menuconfig
 make && make modules_install && modules-rebuild
make install

then in /boot
Code:

dracut initrd.img-3.4.2-gentoo-r1-x86_64-mbp-jms-nvidia-wl-3 vmlinuz-3.4.2-gentoo-r1-x86_64-mbp-jms-nvidia-wl-3
grub2-mkconfig -o grub2/grub.cfg

I also did try to set in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
Code:

blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modset=0
and in /etc/conf.d/modules
Code:
 modules_2_6="${modules_2_6} nvidia"
module_nvidia_args_2_6=""

Might be a stupid (I wouldn't be surprised) mistake something obvious ,but for now I am helplessly blind.
thanks to anyone having a look at it.
Jm

I'm using a Macbook 7,1 (v.similar). I have the same issue when booting in EFI mode. The Nvidia driver only seems to work when booting in BIOS emulation mode. As far as I'm aware it's been a problem since around Kernel version 2.6.35 and hasn't been solved.

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15923
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=174803

p.s. If you check the Xorg log file you'll probably find something similar to this, just before Xorg terminates:

Code:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the display subsystem for the NVIDIA
(EE) NVIDIA(0):     graphics device!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to get supported display device(s)
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize dac HAL

thanks david,
well yes you are confirming my suspicions.
efi +Nvidia GeForce 320M doesn't seems to work.
I found some post yesterday from windows/linux user having the same problem for this card.

http://boardreader.com/thread/Nvidia_320M_in_Windows_8_BIOS_EFI_boot_62hgXsxwg.html
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=650949
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=174803

on the + side nouveau works quite well with efi boot with the exception of external display(messy).

it might be a good idea to open a thread about:
nvidia + efi boot bolb/nouveau working/not?
in wich category shall i put this kernel/hardwars/Desktop Environments?
