Printer Problem Using Cups

  • Quote

Post by hardwork12 » Sat Dec 13, 2003 3:09 am

I am running KDE and using the Printer configuration tool for cups. It seems to show my printer and configures it. I get the following:

Code: Select all

Type: Local printer (parallel, serial, USB)
Name: ComputerRoom
Location:
Description: ESP HP DeskJet Series

Backend
Device: /dev/lp0

Driver
Type: DB driver
Manufacturer: ESP
Model: HP DeskJet Series
Description: HP DeskJet Series CUPS v1.1 [English]
When I test the printer is states the job was sent but nothing prints it does not give any errors. I checked the print jobs and nothing is there.

I also installed the printer from http://localhost:631 and when I look at the test print job it states the following but nothing actually printed. Its like it printed to a file or just loaded into a spooler but never got to the printer.

Code: Select all

Test Page root 15k completed at
Fri Dec 12 17:12:37 2003
My printer is the HP Deskjet 712c and it does not list this explicitely so maybe that is part of the problem.

Where do I look next I am stuck on this one. I am still new to Gentoo (and Linux). Appreciate the help.

hardwork12 - well, i started out to tell you to check out the printing how to and grab the hpijs print drivers, but turns out hpijs doesn't support the 712.

I did find something though at this link that may help you out http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_print ... skJet_712C

Good luck on this one. I know it will work, I used to have a 722 connected to a Mandrake box using cups and it worked great.

I had a similar problem with my Deskjet 825. It seems that cups won't auto power on the printer I have to turn it on manually to get it to print. Seems kinda dumb but it worked for me.

Hope this helps.

I too have that problem with my epson c84
After much digging I found out that all those who got this printer to work use
ACCEPT_KEYWORD="~x86"
in their make.conf to get the latest gimp-print and foomatic + cups
I might try this soon too, and hope to print in gentoo soon :)
good luck!

I have read the link above abd some others that seem to shed some light on this issue but I am lost. I am a printer capability away from being windows free :)

Here is what I did so far:

Code: Select all

emerge -C ghostscript
emerge cups
emerge ghostscript
One post said this would fix it but still prints to hyperspace. It prints but no printout.

now I checked the following packages and find none are currently installed on my system:

Code: Select all

emerge -p gimp-print

emerge -p pnm2ppa

emerge -p foomatic
One post stated I need pnm2ppa but I have no idea after reading the link presented above what to do with it or if that is in fact what I need to do.

Do I need gimp=print?

Do I need pnm2ppa?

Others talk about needing foomatic do I need that?

I can't sort out which programs I really need and/or which order they need to be installed in.

Again I have the HP-712C

Really appreciate the help here I hate to kill my install fooling around too much.

Maybe some of this will help someone send me in the right direction:

My Make.conf has cups in the USE "cups... If that matters
I think I have the kernel right but don't know how to know for sure.
I set my bios for ECP/EPP

Manual used : http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/printing-howto.xml

I did this:

Code: Select all

emerge -C ghostscript
emerge cups foomatic pnm2ppa ghostscript

/etc/init.d/cupsd start
Next I did this got this from a post somehere it was listed as the command for the 712C not sure though:

Code: Select all

foomatic-configure -s cups -p 71232 -c file:/dev/lp0 -n Deskjet -d pnm2ppa
next

Code: Select all

rc-update add cupsd default
/etc/init.d/cupsd start
Used Localhost:631 but had to select 710C (mine is the 712C no selection for that)

Code: Select all

emerge gimp-print
No idea what to do with gimp-print

Next I tried a test page and stated "sent to printer and printed but nothing printed:

/var/log/cups error.log for this test print:

Code: Select all

I ran dmesg:

Code: Select all

there were no enries for parport
realized I missed this step in the guide:

Code: Select all

modprobe parport
modprobe parport_pc
Modprobe parport :

Code: Select all

modprobe parport
modprobe: Can't locate module parport
I found the file parport.o and parport pc.o in the following directory:

Code: Select all

file:/usr/src/linux-2.4.20-gentoo-r6/drivers/parport
As you can see I have no idea where to look for the problem. Any help appreciated. :) not windows free yet :(

sorry to bump this up with a second post.

YES It finally works !!!

The printer I installed called "computerRoom" using Localhost:631 does not work. I did not notice that the command I used for foomatic installed a printer called Deskjet.

Deskjet works perfectly

:) 8O
