how about a thread to suggest eye candy for your desktop? didn't seem to find any that does this. correct me if i'm wrong anyway...

here are some to get started:

3d desktop
alcaron programs
artwiz fonts
aquariumapplet
aterm (suggested by loki3)
Baghira-ebuild
Baghira-Deco (ebuild)
bomb (visual-musical instrument
bootsplash
cafire (set your cursor on fire)
celestia by furanku
convert osx icons
dashboard
demo effects
desktopgirls
deviantart
directfb
docker
dockapps
electric sheep
enlightment (sugested by gearjunkie and saturn-vk) look for iconbar, eplayer, entrance, elicit, erss, entice in cvs
eterm (suggested by loki3)
evidence
expocity
fbdesk (suggested by amgeex)
filelight (suggested by Cherad)
floating head
fluxus
freedesktop
fresco
fsv (3d filesystem representation)
gdesklets
getcontrol
gkrellm
gkrellm tray icons
glmame
gnome art
gnubiff (mail notification)
goats
gtodo
happypenguin (lots of 3d)
idesk (suggested by amgeex)
kahakai (suggested by hegga)
karamba (suggested by arkaine23)
kde look
KNOPPIX LiveCDs (suggested by mahdi and superted)
knotes
KXDocker-ebuild
matrix screensaver (u probably havent seen this one)
MaCoPix(suggested by MartinB)
mplayer skins
overclockix (suggested by arkaine23)
picogui
ps3 (ps in 3d)
pogo
psi various
pypanel
pywm
qingy
really slick screensavers (nice ones!!!)
rox (found a lightweight gtk file manager, amongst other good things)
rsxs
speyes
slicker (suggested by hook)
sticky notes
tdfsb
themedepot
themes at freshmeat
tleds (use ur keyboard leds for net traffic)
Threedsia
transluxent
tuhtah
umicons
winamp plugins
wincustomize for good icons (suggested by ciphrix)
xicons
xine frontends
xfishtank
xmms weasel (hide your xmms automaticlly!!)
xnotes
xpad (suggested by gearjunkie)
xpenguin (suggested by IsaacKuo)
xplanet
xvidcap(some of you may have been looking for this)

--------------------------------------------------------
Tip #1:
animate your desktop with your screensavers by passing the -root option. try something like:

/usr/lib/xscreensaver/xmatrix -root
--------------------------------------------------------
Tip#2:
mplayer with the --rootwin option does the same as above with a movie
--------------------------------------------------------
Tip#3
i was very annoyed that my autohidden gnome panel was showing quite a bit in gnome 2.6. anyway, you can change this using gconf-editor. mine was a bottom panel, so i fixed it by going to:

apps -> panel -> profiles -> bottom_panel -> auto_hide_size

you need to set this key to 0 (zero)
--------------------------------------------------------

so fire away... anything that gives some eye candy to your desktop, some nice themes, apps, tricks, etc.

thanks for the info.. perhaps this would have been better suited for the 'tips and tricks' section?

Nice list-just working my way through it now.

Always looking for eye candy to show off to my non-transparent-enabled-desktop-windows-freinds.

That list might be better if it was sorted - probably alphabetically. I was trying to look up some of my fave eye candy apps and it took several minutes rather than the few seconds it would have taken in an alphabetically sorted list.

maybe not just eye-candy, but an extremly sexy application:

celestia - make your own Star Trek intro sequence (but this time with the light on Saturn from the correct side ;) )

As sweet as 3ddesktop is, I certainly sucks up enough memory to convince me not to use it. It's nice though....

from the latest release 0.2.6:

Quote:
Release 0.2.6
-------------
* Add 'f' as toggle for 'random fun mode' and --noautofun [Phil]
* Avoid 3 sec delay when starting 3ddeskd from 3ddesk [Gregory Kovriga]
* Use a lower priority for the deamon to lessen screen cap hit (use 12)
* Add autoacquire feature to acquire current desktop every 2 seconds
* Add random view option
* Improvements to memory usage [Toph]
* Add --dontexit flag to not exit after a goto
* Flush message queue before activation
* Have goto movement start right away rather then wait for entry movement
* Show screen numbers greater then 10 correctly [Robert Wittams]

aparently the memory usage is improved. anyone tried it recently?

Yep, seems reliable enough to me; Memory issues use to be a real bitch.

How much memory are we talking here? 100MB more or less.
Also, what about the CPU usage?

No. Sorry.

Was this list intended only for apps in the portage tree?
