Suggest that you use one of the many viable automated install scripts, which will be much easier for you.

Just kidding. A few questions:
  • What install media are you using?
  • Are you attempting a 32-bit or a 64-bit install?
  • Can I get a peek at your /etc/make./conf file, please?

Are you using genkernel to build the kernel or just to get an initramfs? From your /etc/fstab, you don't seem to have a separate /usr so you don't absolutely need one.

Also, although it won't affect anything right now, you have an error in your /etc/fstab. First non-comment line: /dev/BOOT should probably be /dev/sda1. Isn't that where your boot partition is?

I'm going to reinstall! do I need genkernel? can I install syslinux as bootloader? imperative .boot partition(I believe syslinux support btrfs)?

Don't reinstall. This is a very bad habit that people get into because of experience with another operating system that starts with 'W' and ends with 's'. There's nothing irretrievable at this point, and you've done useful work.

To rejoin your install, follow NeddySeagoons' Rough Guide to Chrooting.

You don't need exotic bootloaders to support exotic root filesystems. Stick with grub.

The Handbook describes two methods of building a kernel: the genkernel way (mostly for beginners), and the manual way (which is harder until you get the hang of it). Many people will recommend the manual way, but there's nothing wrong with using genkernel to begin with.

Why don't you have a boot partition? If you didn't make one, then you missed a Handbook step. It looked to me from your /etc/fstab that /dev/sda1 was your boot partition. Is that not so?

Exotic root partitions and the lack of a boot partition do not go together, especially when you're just starting out. The purpose of the boot partition is to provide something that the bootloader can easily read and also a place that is explicitly different from root so that the boot files aren't on a filesystem that is modified constantly.

I'm getting the exact same error on a fresh installation on a new 64-bit Intel Xeon workstation with the latest version of Gentoo. I ran:
Code:
genkernel --menuconfig all
The only thing I changed in the configuration was the CPU architecture (to Core 2). The kernel and modules build without any problems, but the build process fails when it gets to initramfs.

I'm following the Handbook as closely as possible, and I repeated the process twice to make sure I wasn't missing a step. Please let me know what else you need to know to help debug this. I can't paste emerge --info unless you can show me how to do that from Links!

Okay, so where would you like to put your boot partition? You can repartition everything beyond the Windows partition without losing the Windows partition. A separate boot partition is recommended. If you absolutely refuse to do that, then you need to choose a filesystem for your root partition that grub can read. However, this reduced your flexibility and, some would say, the reliability of your system.

Your fstab needs to be corrected:
Code:

mount: special device /dev/BOOT does not exist

Gerard.

Let me clarify the error--this is not an fstab problem! If you follow the handbook, you build the kernel before you configure the filesystems in the chroot environment. His fstab is incorrect because he hasn't gotten to that point in the installation process. The first error he's reporting is the error that I'm also getting:
Code:
 <snip> --

Unless we fix the problem with building initramfs, we will never be able to boot with the new kernel that genkernel has created (at least as far as I understand genkernel).

buddie...can u clarify how to 'fix' the problem with building initramfs? (don't refer me to handbook) can be possible not install genkernel? do u see 'Optionally' word below?

Code:
Optionally  build an initramfs to boot from:

Code Listing 2.20: Building an initramfs

# emerge genkernel
# genkernel --install --no-ramdisk-modules initramfs

i'm interested to do a new installation!

Well, there are some fundamental problems:
  • You don't need an initramfs. I don't know why you're trying to build one. If you think you do need one, could you explain why? More to the point, trying to build an initramfs before successfully building the kernel is guaranteed to fail.
  • With the filesystem you've chosen for your root partition, you do need a boot partition. Even if we solve your kernel build issues, you won't be able to boot. Am I right that you still want btrfs?
Could you clarify your intentions a little bit, please? We can help, but right now your install concept is broken. We need to change something or it'll never work.

Finally, if a part of the install fails, you can't just go on to the next step. You need to either report the issues—in detail—here or diagnose and correct them yourself before proceeding. I suspect that not following this rule is how you got to this point in the first place.

So, tell us a little bit about your intentions and we'll go from there.

From what I have read, genkernel requires initramfs in order to boot. Please correct me if I'm wrong about this. The handbook simply recommends
Code:
genkernel all
which builds a kernel, modules, and initramfs. If you manually configure and build the kernel, you may not need initramfs. I don't know how to fix the problem with building initramfs, which is why I'm posting here in the hopes that someone else has a solution.

My current workaround is to manually configure the kernel (which I was hoping to avoid by using genkernel), build it, follow the rest of the steps in the Handbook and see if it works.

Not strictly, no it doesn't, although it is standard to use one with the Handbook-based gernkernel method. However, the OP is running
Code:
# genkernel --install --no-ramdisk-modules initramfs
which is not normally what is done if you're building a kernel with genkernel. Situation is confused in other ways as well. Trying to get clarification. :)

ok dude...let me clarify the matter:

I'm going to do a new install with no /boot and with btrfs and syslinux as bootloader http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Syslinux_Bootloader
Quote:

With the filesystem you've chosen for your root partition, you do need a boot partition.
that's no true at all!

gentoo-sources like the handbook says[no genkernel|no initramfs]

off the record: I've installled a lot of times Arch with syslinux and /btrfs with no /boot and all went fine...

so,what do U think?

I should've been more clear. I really meant that, with an exotic root partition, you need a boot partition with a standard Gentoo Handbook install. I'd recommend that for your first Gentoo install. I'll be able to help you better and so will others. Furthermore, with a separate boot partition, when your exotic filesystem crashes, you won't have trashed your kernel. But, hey: whatever floats your boat.

homie...I'm concerned why /etc/fstab didn't recognize btrfs as FS on last install? is there something wrong with that or is it 'normal'?
Code:
/dev/sda3      /      ext3      noatime      0 1

If it's btrfs, then it needs to state btrfs instead of ext3. The 3rd parameter on each line of /etc/fstab is the filesystem type.

now I'm stuck at:
Code:
#  env-update && source /etc/profile
!!! Invalid PORTDIR_OVERLAY (not a dir): '/usr/portage'
!!! main-repo not set in DEFAULT and PORTDIR is empty.
>>> Regenerating /etc/ld.so.cache...
# emerge --sync --quiet
!!! Invalid PORTDIR_OVERLAY (not a dir): '/usr/portage'
!!! main-repo not set in DEFAULT and PORTDIR is empty.
>>> /usr/portage not found, creating it.

what to do?

Looks like you might've missed the step where you download and unpack a Portage snapshot. That's in the Handbook at Chapter 3, section 5c: Installing Portage. If you don't think you missed that step, check the /usr/portage directory. It should have lots of files in it. If it's nonexistent or empty, then you definitely missed (or misexecuted) that step.

Let me know what you see in the /usr/portage directory and we'll go from there.

well...out of luck!

now:

Code:
booting 'Gentoo Linux'

root (hd0,0)

Filesystem tipe unknown partition type 0x7

kenel /boot/linux-3.2.12-gentoo

Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition

press any key to continue...

partition table(just change btrfs for ext4): http://ompldr.org/vZG95ZA

at least can enter to win$UCK$ and write from there...
