I upgraded something that broke my login.
When I try to login, it doesn't ask for a password and prints the userid prompt 3 times.
I used a livecd and chrooted to my installin the hope that it would display an error when I su - to a userid.
I think the problem is related to with pam not being able to load a library.
How do I see which library is causing the problem?

I have the same exact problem. This must be something recent because everything was working up until I did a -uD world after syncing. I tried running revdep-rebuild without any results. Anyone have any ideas? It kind of sucks to have to use Mint Linux from a USB drive until I get this fixed...

I checked /var/log/pwdfail and this is what I have:

Code:
Apr 20 18:09:24 [login] FAILED LOGIN (1) on '/dev/tty2' FOR 'user123', Authentication failure
Apr 20 18:09:26 [login] FAILED LOGIN (2) on '/dev/tty2' FOR 'UNKNOWN', Authentication failure
Apr 20 18:09:29 [login] FAILED LOGIN (3) on '/dev/tty2' FOR 'UNKNOWN', Authentication failure
Apr 20 18:09:31 [login] FAILED LOGIN (4) on '/dev/tty2' FOR 'UNKNOWN', Authentication failure
Apr 20 18:09:34 [login] FAILED LOGIN (5) on '/dev/tty2' FOR 'UNKNOWN', Authentication failure

It never even gave me the password prompt.

Did you run an `etc-update` and update the files in /etc/pam.d ?

Aha, I feel foolish having missed that! Hopefully that will solve it after I reboot and try it, but you're right I just noticed I have the following:

Code:
Scanning Configuration files...
The following is the list of files which need updating, each
configuration file is followed by a list of possible replacement files.
1) /etc/pam.d/login (1)
2) /etc/pam.d/passwd (1)
3) /etc/pam.d/su (1)

If you reboot, be sure you have a liveCD ready, because without updating your configs, your PAM is borked you won't be able to login :(

Or a usb stick with Mint or whatever on it, made with unetobotin ;). I kind of dig this distro as far as being able to use everything on my system, sound, X, and everything works rather well for 0 configuration. Really made browsing the forums a little more of a pleasurable experience rather than doing it in console with links :P.

Edit:
Rebooted, works perfectly after etc-update as well.

I found out the hard way.
I always forget to update my config files right away. :-(
