Looking for a way to show my support

I am trying to find a way I can give back to the awesome community that is GENTOO. Thought maybe someone in here could give some advice on ways to help out. Let me fill you in a little on who or what I am.

1) Big time computer NUT. I have more pc equipment down in my basement than most businesses have. Well over a terabyte of storage space. All on Gentoo, only the wife's and my one gaming machine are 'dozed.

2) I have a fair understanding of programming. Have written with C/C++, Basic, etc... although I have done none in Linux. (It's on my list)

3) Been searching for Extraterrestrial Life for several years now. (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/stat ... 49448.html)

4) I spread the word of Gentoo everywhere I go.

5) Would like to put my 'net connection on a bigger pipe, just haven't found a reason to justify doing so.

6) Is my lucky number.

Any ideas on what a person like me could do for our community?
I am not against donating an install to testing for the devs, if they need certiain types of HW to test on.

Just hang out in the forums and answer questions :) Also, you can go to bugs.gentoo.org and fix bugs if you wish. All the devs are really busy, and more help couldn't possibly hurt, plus i'm sure there are a lot of projects that could use some help, just take a look. There's a gentoo seti@home group too you can join, just look in the forums for it, try searching for seti. Anything really. Just find something that keeps you interested, and stick with it. Also, the GWN needs help too. There's also a hardware wiki that could use some more input.

See what I mean by awesome?

Not even a half hour and got several responses to this. :D

snakattak3 - I am already climbing the Gentoo Linux Users Seti Group (trooper82), but as for the bug tracking, that sounds interesting. I have spent many a day in the "code woods" as fravia+ used to say. And thanks for the Wiki link.

chiatello - That was my original intention, but feared I cannot afford a pipe fat enough for the public ruleset set forth for rsync mirrors, and there would be no benefit for just friends using it. Maybe a Gentoo promoting, free ddns service?

sunblade - I have a complete local copy of every *.iso, and still bought 1.4 - Athlon XP, when it was released. And am looking to the future of Gentoo 2004.

Wow... you really are a tropper, hehehe. Now I feel like a bum because I haven't bought my LiveCDs, yet. A P4 and AthlonXP set would make a good X-Mas gift to myself, no?

im beginning to feel a bit less of a parasite these days as i'm actually answering more questions than i ask, dont underestimate the value of the irc & forums support to the success of gentoo, users and reviewers consistently rate it as one of the major advantages to gentoo. when else would you be able to pool the technical expertise of thousands of users who will answer your queries promptly and polietly.

trooper82, along with these forums, there are a number of areas in which Gentoo can benefit from users contributing their time and expertise:
  • Gentoo Linux Development team
    Gentoo BugDays
    Gentoo Linux Documentation team
    Gentoo Weekly Newsletter
More details can be found on the Gentoo User Relations project page.

Ciao, Brandy

Brandy,

Thanks for your link too. I have never really dug much past the install docs and the forums. Guess I need to take a better look at the site, plenty of thngs out there.

And Sunblade, yes I was.

Ciao, Brandy
EDIT: Sorry, didn't know people were so sensitive in the gentoo community. The insensitivity to "n00bs" is much greater than a compliment a woman may get on a forum.

One of the best ways to help out the Gentoo team is to donate money. I know it sounds corny, but it really is one of the best ways to help out. Bandwidth costs money. Running the multiple Gentoo infrastructure servers costs money. Maintainence costs, etc.

There is a donate button on the top left of gentoo.org.

Or you could do what I did, work hard for a long, long time and eventually become a developer.

How much money does gentoo make off of it's cd's? I would think at least a couple dollars from each sale goes to the project? Just curious.

How much money does it take to "run" gentoo? I know that's not very precise a question, but I'm just wondering what order of magnitude we're talking about.

Oh. While we're on the subject of helping out - here's another dumb question. How do the bug days work? Every time I get on IRC on bug day, I can't really figure out what is going on or what I can do to help.

Thanks.
