Can anyone help me with this? I just installed the VMware Tools package that is part of Fusion and at the end it asked if I wanted it to auto rebuild modules if needed. I said yes and then when it tried to do its thing it failed saying it could not find mkinitrd or update-initramfs. I know mkinitrd is not in portage any more but not sure how to fix this. I am using a Genkernel. Thanks!

| I would avoid using the package that comes with Fusion, and emerge app-emulation/open-vm-tools instead. |

Why? And if I do, how do I access the HGFS / shared folders |

Because open-vm-tools is Gentoo-supported and provides all the guest tools functionality while being integrated with portage for easy installation/updating. You can mount the HGFS stuff in exactly the same way in your fstab:

| +1 for open-vm-tools. I had a lot of issues with the original tools, the open-vm-tools just works, I did not noticed single issue with it and all mu guests under ESXi use ii. |

Thanks for the help.  The info about ESXi was also very useful as we have Gentoo and VMware at work. |

Just a quick query.
I have Gentoo x86 running in vmware player, installed open-vm-tools.
However, the mouse release does not seem to work. I have to press ctrl-alt to release the mouse, doesn't the vmware tools do auto release, just like VirtualBox?
