|
|
Can anyone help me with this? I just installed the VMware Tools package that is part of Fusion and at the end it asked if I wanted it to auto rebuild modules if needed. I said yes and then when it tried to do its thing it failed saying it could not find mkinitrd or update-initramfs. I know mkinitrd is not in portage any more but not sure how to fix this. I am using a Genkernel. Thanks!
Code: | VMware automatic kernel modules enables automatic building and installation of
VMware kernel modules at boot they are not already present. By selecting yes,
you will be enabling this experimental feature. You can always disable this
feature by re-running vmware-config-tools.pl.
Would you like to enable VMware automatic kernel modules?
[yes]

I would avoid using the package that comes with Fusion, and emerge app-emulation/open-vm-tools instead. |

Why? And if I do, how do I access the HGFS / shared folders |

Because open-vm-tools is Gentoo-supported and provides all the guest tools functionality while being integrated with portage for easy installation/updating. You can mount the HGFS stuff in exactly the same way in your fstab:
Code: | .host:/ /mnt/hgfs vmhgfs defaults,ttl=5 0 0 |

+1 for open-vm-tools. I had a lot of issues with the original tools, the open-vm-tools just works, I did not noticed single issue with it and all mu guests under ESXi use ii. |

Thanks for the help. The info about ESXi was also very useful as we have Gentoo and VMware at work. |

Just a quick query.
I have Gentoo x86 running in vmware player, installed open-vm-tools.
However, the mouse release does not seem to work. I have to press ctrl-alt to release the mouse, doesn't the vmware tools do auto release, just like VirtualBox? _________________ ...Lyall |
