Hello everybody

I recently just rebuilt my gentoo system from scratch. I installed gnome 3 using the instructions given in this link

http://oleeekchoff.blogspot.com/2011/10/gnome-3-on-gentoo.html

My problem is that I can boot up and log in fine but when I log in I get stuck with only the default background showing, nothing else. Sometimes there will be what looks like a bar flashing at the top for a split second and it won't show again. Any suggestions? Logs I should check? is there one central gnome log that might have an error in it? there's nothing about gnome in /var/log

Hi cyberpirate,

I installed Gnome-3.2 from yesterday to today. Its works! :D

If a problem came up I used

Code:
 lafilefixer --justfixit

Code:
python-updater

Code:
 revdep-rebuild

and I need in /etc/portage/package.keywords/

gnome3-more.keywords wrote:

dev-lang/spidermonkey
media-libs/gupnp-dlna
net-wireless/wpa_supplicant
x11-themes/gtk-engines

and in /etc/portage/package.use
gnome3-more.use wrote:

net-dns/avahi gtk3
net-misc/curl ssl -nss -gnutls

A other problem are the applets. I had to deinstall Networkmanager an his dependencis and a lot more.
Aften installing Gnome3.2 is finished I installed Networkmanager, nm-applet, cairo-dock. And its works fine.

Thanks to the developers! Great work!

Ma

bad

I use a radeon card with the propiretäre driver.
If you use a Intel card look to the many threads in this forum.

Ma

ps.
Did you
etc-update? env-update? source /etc/profile?

and last

delete, or mv all .config .locale dirs in your /home-dir and restart?

I use the nvidia gts 250 with the drivers off portage, it worked fine in gnome 2. And instead of etc-update etc. I rebooted and instead of deleting all the config files I moved my home directory and made a new user

do you really think its a graphics issue? The graphics seem to be fine it's just that the desktop environment isn't loading

No, not really. It was only one thought.
In the meantime I had substantial problems with the start (many times like yours) and the sound.
Current is the sound there, other times not there. I run a emerge -e system and controlled the authorizations with this thread --> https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-858965-postdays-0-postorder-asc-start-0.html.

If a problem arises, I must so often start again until it works. If I made a action, sometimes the screen flashes.
3.2 is still incorrectly.

I use xdm with gdm. My next plan is to start with .xinitrc

echo "exec gnome-session" > ~/.xinitrc
and
sed -i '1i\export XDG_MENU_PREFIX=gnome-' ~/.xinitrc

I try it now.

Did this and it didn't seem to improve my situation, but the black bar that flashes once at the top of the screen was bigger and more noticeable now, if it counts for anything, also your link is broken

EDIT:

hold the phone, I just found a file in my home directory that may help

Hi,

I have similar error messages in my ~/.xsession-errors. Only a few more, because I installed gnome tweak tool.

# emerge gnome-tweak-tool -s wrote:

I changed back too xdm gdm and adjusted autologin. Thus I receive the sound after each restart. 8)

I changed to the current GCC.
# gcc-config -l wrote:

And now runs a emerge -e system and emerge - e world.

I dont know whether it helps.

Did you do an rc-update del xdm?
reboot
login as user, not root?
Then: --> startx?

I have the same gcc profile as you and I deleted xdm from my bootup. I logged into my non-root account and ran startx. The same thing came up as when I logged in using xdm but using startx from an ssh client allowed me to grab what startx printed out, which is what follows

You need a FQDN. That is a basic requirement of gnome! --> http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?full=1#book_part1_chap8

In my case:

marlo@tux ~ $ hostname wrote:

tux

marlo@tux ~ $ hostname -f wrote:

tux.earth

You reach it, if in:
sudo cat /etc/conf.d/hostname wrote:

# Set to the hostname of this machine
hostname="tux"

appears your hostname and in

sudo cat /etc/hosts wrote:

127.0.0.1 tux.earth tux

also. Without this, gnome cannot use the internal services.
If you have a server for the Internet, you need a fqdn with 2 dots. For example: server1.mydomain.com

This is a part from your /var/log/Xorg.0.log. How you can see, you must regulate the time. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=7#doc_chap1

YES its working now :)

heres what I did

I added this section to my xorg.conf file

Code:

Section "Module"
    Load           "glx"
    Load           "extmod"
    SubSection     "extmod"
Option         "omit xfree86-dga" # don't initialise the DGA extension
    EndSubSection
EndSection

that got rid of the glx error but then two more errors popped up about dri and dri2 so with the help of this site
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-845429-highlight-dri2.html

I added

Code:

Section "Files"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib64/xorg/modules"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib64/opengl/xorg-x11/extensions/"
EndSection

to my xorg, so my entire xorg.conf looks like this

Code:

# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig:  version 275.09.07  (buildmeister@swio-display-x86-rhel47-03.nvidia.com)  Wed Jun  8 14:38:32 PDT 2011

Also one more thing, if you have a second monitor, disconnect it. Gnome 3 doesn't seem to work for me under a multi-monitor setup, which I think may have been part of the original problem

So you disconnected your second monitor only to run gnome 3?

I have exactly the same problem as you. If i work with only one monitor. Gnome 3 works without any problems, but if i go to nvidia-settings and configure the second screen. Gnome 3 doesn't start (it tries to start in fallback mode).
I don't know why it doesn't start. I changed the xorg.conf like you pasted here, but it doesn't work.

Any ideas?

from .xsession-errors:
Code:

gnome-session-is-accelerated: Zaphod mode not supported.
gnome-session-check-accelerated: Helper exited with code 256
gnome-session[2708]: WARNING: Session 'cinnamon' runnable check failed: Exited with code 1

Both screens are in fact accelerated, but gnome-shell insists on dealing with only one screen.

In my case I get a fallback-style shell with no panels.

:(

I am running cinnamon (a Gnome-shell fork) under Linux Mint 12, but the problem happens with a lot of other setups I have tried. KDE seems to deal OK with Zaphod mode. Awesome (a very geeky window manager) fully embraces it. Unfortunately time constraints prevent me from learning awesome well enough to make it pretty.

Maybe try xinerama as a workaround. :?:

update: Nope. xinerama makes it worse. I'll stick with awesome.
