ok is there a issue with the glide ebuild???
I've tried to emerge a full gl based x install
{xfree then glide then xfree again then mesa-glu}
I striped the Cflags for glide sence they can make it unstable
and dri works for X
but mesa-glu refused to compile stating that
/usr/lib/libglide3.la is a unknown file type :(
I had voodoo3 and 3dfx in the USE var.
what do I need to do to get everything to fit right???

Download libglide3-v3.so and glide3headers from this page:
http://dri.sourceforge.net/
They are in section 'Resources'

No, you don't need to recompile X.
I changed glide several times without need to recompile X but in long run I don't know what's going to be. So far I haven't had any probems, except one I have problem with latest mplayer, it works but pressing stop cause it to exit with fatal gdk error and I have to reset terminal to see what I type there but I don't know if it is related to X and glide.

And if you want glide to compile follow instruction you find on those pages :)
http://hints.linuxfromscratch.org/hints//dri.txt
http://hints.linuxfromscratch.org/hints//tuxracer.txt
There's no difference between ebuild and steps from those links, However my libglide.so was bigger about 20 kb when I compiled it following instructions you find there. Don't know why.

You didn't need to strip glide from cc flags, it is compiled without any gentoo flags.
You can try to move away libglide.la and see how it works because it seems to it isn't really needed.
