I'm a ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64" user.
Today portage suddenly wants to install gnome-3.2 crap on my system:

Code:

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

If you don't want gnome at all on your system have you tried putting "-gnome" into your useflags?

It seems that I need the gnome-setting-daemon to make Firefox
look decent in wmii. And I don't care if a few gnome libraries
get installed as long as they aren't from gnome-3.

Talking about a wrong solution to a non-existent problem.
If I'm reading the above right, it was simply a matter of setting a gtk2 theme.
My firefox has been '-gnome' for a really long time (when firefox still had the flag) and it didn't hurt its appearance in any way.

OK. I will give "-gnome" a try.

any status update on that approach?
or shall I start masking all gnome3 packages?

OK, I've unmerged all gnome related libs and apps.
Then I've reinstalled all packages that used the keyword "gnome" before.
That allowed me to finally delete the mask posted above.

Thanks to the hint from VoidMage I've set a nice theme with gtk-theme-switch
and there is no difference in the appearance of Firefox (compared to before).
