It annoys me that my forum profile still keeps calling me a n00b (which I assumes means I am new here).

I am not a n00b, I have been adminstrating Gentoo for 6 years, Linux in general for 16 years, and other Unixes for 24 years. I only have 39 postings (40 now) because I don't spam the forum every time something goes wrong, instead I go looking for the answer, and usually learn a lot more that way.

How can I change this?

Unfortunately it changes based on post count. Personally i wouldn't pay it much attention as it's pretty meaningless. A high post count and/or a different title doesn't mean a person knows anymore than the next. Some people have a high count because they don't take the time to research problems on their own. They just post here so others can tell them what to do. You'll notice that it also list the date that you joined so people still know you've been using gentoo for a long time

Unfortunately? I think I disagree. All metrics are flawed in one way or another, but the high post count non-contributors are the exception rather than the rule, I believe.

ddriver, see FO2: How long before I'm not a n00b? (forum rankings) in the FAQ. The short answer is, by helping the community. Just answer a few questions and you'll lose your noob stigmata in no time.

You're not a gentoo n00b, you're an f.g.o n00b, which is correct, because you don't post here very often.

Just post post post!

That's it, as stated, it goes by the post-count.
I would never get bothered by it really, or well, rather I do not think of it. All things said, I am a bit bothered about being "marked as a guru" (at the time of posting) of all things while I am truly THE Noob Unlimited.

Guess we all have are annoyances. D:
Either way, if you post things that wont get you banned, it will change... But I would never encourage anyone to do it because of that. Actually, while on the topic, I should definitely be granted an exclusive title of "The Noob Unlimited".

Yes.

Chiitoo,

If its not taken, your forums nick could become "The Noob Unlimited" :)

Heh, a good point.
I never really thought of it as a 'nick' however, but I shall ponder upon it!

As Chiitoo said just post post post.

Writing lots of stuff about nothing is a form of art.

You sound like a typical laconic efficient type.

Not big on words but you make stuff happen.

When I think more about it isn't that like going against your own nature?

If you write plenty nonsense messages and soon you will level up. This is a drawback of forums, have a look at stackexchange, where programmers included a better rating system.

I fully agree with you that it is impolite and misleading to call users with less messages "n00b". They should be called "new user" or similar.

Just post a lot, and post really good advice and stuff. Also, I'm a previous user who had long forgotten his username, so until I can get my previous username back, if I can, I'm using this account. Also, kinda on the fence about trying Gentoo in Vbox, and currently run Fedora 19 on my hardware and have Archbang set up in Vbox as well.

I've posted there once or twice. I was surprised it increased my post count. Most forums I know do not do it. Whats the idea behind counting OTW posts as supporting?

I believe you're mistaken. Our board is configured not to count OTW posts toward your post count and thus your rank.

You could try contacting site staff privately via forum-mods@gentoo.org, or if you prefer IRC initiating contact via #gentoo-forums on freenode or OFTC, any private information would be exchanged via /query.
